Too many blessings to be upsetOh, my- wouldn't you know it- I plan to do a series of posts and God plans differently.I am reminded of a favorite verse, Proverbs 16:9 "We can make our plans , but the LORD determines our steps." God has definitely been determining my steps. And so my series of Back to School posts is on hiatus at this time. I might be able to squeeze one or two out at the beginning of next week- but God could change that too. Yesterday evening a very quick but ferocious storm blew through. We were fine here in our little town but my parents lost 150+ year old Oak tree in their front yard. A bit of background: My parents own the home that was once my great grandparents and they live on an old highway- my great grandfather ran a little gas station right next to the house in the late 40's and early 50's until the new highway was built and he was "forced out of business" due to lack of customers. The gas pumps and such are all gone (as well as the his and hers outhouses out back!) but the station still stands and has become a sort of storage shed for my parents. They have always parked their car out under the canopy (over-hang roof) of the station. Anyway- I'm sure you've guessed where I was leading with this- the HUGE Oak fell on the station. My parent's car was parked under the canopy but was fine. The Oak hit to the edge and side of the roof- mostly the canopy- it only collapsed on one end but severely buckled the roof and the building is not safe. We are thanking God that the tree fell and went in that direction- because the other direction would have meant it hitting the house and the damage would have been much more severe (and people could have been injured). We are thankful my parents new car is undamaged. And my father stated last night he is just plain thankful the tree came down now- as we can now see it was completely rotten on the inside and quite unsafe and had been for a very long time. All the family troops went over to help start the clean up last evening. First priority was getting the large section of the tree out of the intersection. My parents also didn't have power so Mr. Conductor and I stayed behind at home to make a hearty supper and fill up jugs of water. Our menu has been from the pantry and freezer this week but as life goes- we didn't end up having paprika chicken on Tuesday nite due to me needing to be with a youth group family (the father that passed this week). So we had flip- flopped Tuesday and Thursday's menus and all I needed to do was double the paprika chicken recipe. So I was able to quickly make and take a hearty meal and felt very blessed to do so. By the time I arrived at my parents (Mr. Steady and the girls had left right after my parents called), I found not only my brother and husband helping my dad but friends and neighbors too- including two teen boys who had been biking by and stopped to lend a hand. Oh, how good the LORD is to us. There are so many blessings just flowing from this mishap that we cannot help but rejoice. He is the God of provision. My parents won't even bemoan the loss of the building because of all the blessings. Oh, and I didn't mention- my parents burn wood for heat- and did I say that the tree was HUGE- because it was and once that Oak cures my dad will have wood for two heating seasons! God is good. Good indeed! Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 435 of 1515 } { Next Page } |
