WFMW: Dinner Discussion Starters

2:53 PM, 2007-Aug-15 .. Posted in Works for Me .. 1 comments .. Link
It’s that middle day of the week again- and you know what that means!
Works For Me Wednesday!
My tip today is how stimulate conversation at the dinner table with the family. Make Discussion Starters! Get yourself a bunch of index cards and start writing down some questions or finish the sentence lines. Some of the best questions for the dinner table are “Have you ever . . . .” or “Would you rather . . . .”
Don’t worry if you only have a few ideas to start with- once you and your family start this other ideas will begin coming to you and soon you’ll be carrying index cards with you where ever you go so that when inspiration strikes you can write it down.
Here are a few to get you going:
Would you rather water ski or snow ski?
Would you rather have a monkey or a giraffe for a pet?
Would you rather empty port-a-potties or muck barn stalls for a living?
Would you rather lose an arm or a leg?
Would you rather get caught picking your nose or picking your underwear out (wedgie)?
Would you rather go blind or deaf?
Have you ever gotten scared?
Have you ever lied to a friend?
Have you ever done a wheelie on your bike?
Have you ever passed gas in public?
Have you ever sent someone a love note?
Have you ever lost something?
Have you ever found something?
Don’t forget to ask them why they answered that way!
Finish the Sentence . . . .
One thing I’d like to have . . . .
One place I’d like to visit . . . .
If I could live anywhere I would live . . . .
If I had to name myself I would be called . . . .
The best present I ever got was . . . .
The best present I ever gave was . . . .
Name your Favorite . . . .
[finish the sentence]
Dessert/Family Vacation/Camping Trip/Song/Bible Verse/Candy Bar etc. etc. You’ll get loads of ideas for this one. And don’t forget when they finish the sentence to ask “Why is that your favorite?”
Well, I think I’ve given you a pretty good head start. Think of funny ones and think of serious ones and watch the discussion happen! You may want to change your starters with the seasons- like now would be a great time for questions pertaining to back to school and then ones about Thanksgiving and Christmas and so on and on. For storage- we started out with an old check box that we decorated up nice and neat but now we have a small basket that holds the cards. You could use a recipe box also.
Just think of the possibilities!
Works for Me Wednesday is graciously hosted by Shannon of Rocks in My Dryer. Check out all the other wonderful tips and tricks over there!

Great ideas! However, with 5 boys at the table.... Rarely is anyone lost for words. LOL!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
