Home Sweet Simple Home

What we're looking at come fall- for HS group

Yesterday evening the mamas in my homeschool group had Mom's Planning Nite Out. We combined planning our group school year with some much needed girls-nite-out time (that's eating dinner out and lots upon lots of girl chattin').
Our group meets every Tuesday through-out the school year (September to May) and consists of kiddos from 8th grade to baby. We like to take a unit study approach to the year with 2 moms teaming up together to teach our subject of the month. Last year we studying a few of the 50 states- this year we have decided to learn more about some great people in American History.
The idea all started when one of the mamas got A Drive Thru History-America DVD curriculum set for *free* for signing up for 2 years of HSLDA. You must click on the link to Drive Thru History to really see and appreciate this incredible curriculum. To just sum it all up (and not even begin to do it justice) the curriculum features 8 historical figures and highlights their lives and contributions to America. There is also a corresponding character trait for each historical figure. So with a bit of tweaking and adding a figure not covered (and dropping one that was) we will be studying the following  this year:
September: Benjamin Franklin- character trait: commitment
October: Abigal Adams- character trait: influence
November: Haym Salomon- character trait: generosity
December: no historical figure this month
January: George Washington- character trait: self-control
February: Sojourner Truth (historical figure we, the group added, we haven't assigned her a specific character trait as of yet)
March: John Quincy Adams- character trait: determination
April: Benjamin Banneker- character trait: patience
May: Noah Webster- character trait: perseverance

Each month the 2 assigned moms are responsible for presenting the historical figure and their character trait- leaving room for interpretation and presentation for each mama duo- except that each trait will have a corresponding bible verse and 4 different life applications for the kiddos to choose from to help them better understand the trait.
I am so excited about it. What incredible historical figures to learn more about and the DVD is a major WOW! factor. We have such a diverse group of moms too so I know each figure will be presented a bit differently (just like the states we covered this year) making the boredom factor extremely low.
I'll be sharing more about this school year's plan and how we run our little homeschool group as time permits.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
