Things my Dad has taught me

I am in charge of the Father's Day program at our church and it has caused me to think and think and think of the things my Dad has taught me over the years- here's a partial list (a condensed list that I will be sharing during our Father's Day program at church).

~ Work hard. Play after the work is done.

~ Speaking of working hard- work as if you are working for yourself and the Lord and give 110% to the job. No matter how bad the job or the boss might be.

~ No job is beneath you and no job is too menial not to do well. You never know who is watching you.

~ If it’s broke- fix it or get rid of it. (hide the evidence)

~ The only thing more important than your family is God.

~ Do not let your child divide you and your wife. My dad’s words were these, “Even if I don’t agree with what your mom is saying, I’m going to agree with her in front of you. Don't even try to pit us against each other- it won't work.” [side note: and it never did work.]

~ If your child fixes dinner- just eat it. One meal won’t kill you.

~ On the other hand- if you cook a lousy meal- admit it and treat everyone to pizza.

~ Know where your tools are. Know how to use them. Know how to clean and put them away.
Also good—Know how to hunt down the tools your kids have pilfered.

~ Teasing a daughter about greeting her date with a shotgun in hand is just a way to say, “I’ll always protect you.”

~ Using a LOT of lighter fluid will help start your fire a whole lot quicker. But be ready to jump back fast- especially if you like your eyebrows intact.

~ Never eat too much dinner. Always save room for ice cream.

~ When attempting to inflate a large air mattress and it won’t inflate- do not get mad; do not say “Dog-gone dirty bugger” instead check to see if you are standing on the air compressor hose.

~ When going on vacation make that first OOPS! U-turn as soon as possible- just to get it out of the way.

~ Never attempt to read a map while driving or to disagree with the map reader while driving or try to yank the map from the map reader while driving.

~ No matter how you feel about it- always go out of your way to find that little hamlet or village or funny road sign that your wife read about. And smile while you do it. You never know what you may find.

~ Worms don’t have feelings—just pinch off a piece and put it on the hook.

~ Chips are a great side dish for just about anything.

~ Pick up a good book instead of the remote.

~ Don’t give up- Try harder.

~ Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help—or directions.

~ If all else fails get out the instruction booklet that came with it.

~ If you don’t know how to do it- find someone to show you how and/or read up on it.

~ Can’t never tried.

There are many other things my father has taught me – this list could go on and on.
—Mr. Steady and I were listening to Dr. Dobson on the radio the other evening and he shared a study- Fathers were asked how much time they thought they spent with their young children each day and the average answer was 45 minutes. These same dads then let themselves be recorded for a week and the truth was found to be that the average father spends 37.6 seconds with their young children one-on-one each day. Dr. Dobson then compared this to the statistic that the average preschooler watches 56 hours of television per week (that’s 8 hours of TV a day). Dr. Dobson went on to say this “Ask your child if he would rather have a TV or a Dad?”
My dad worked second shift through most of my growing up years- until I was a junior in high school. During school we only saw him on the weekends but my brother and sister and I never doubted our father’s love for us or for our mother or his love and devotion to Jesus.
Why?
Because he lived it out in front of us each day year after year- just as his Dad taught him growing up.
My dad taught me the value of time spent with family- that only God is more important than your family.

Joshua 24:15-- “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom you will serve; . . . . . but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
