WFMW- Birthday Edition

It’s Wednesday and you know what that means! Works For Me Wednesday! I took a break last week but I’m back with the WFMW crowd today. And guess what? Today’s WFMW is a special edition- the Birthday Edition.
So here’s my tips for how we do birthdays here in our neck of the woods.
First off, My husband, dear man that he is, does not work on the birthday kid’s birthday! He takes the day off.  In fact, the kid’s birthdays are the first vacation dates he marks off every January. That man is just wonderful.
Birthdays around here start with the birthday kiddo waking up to a room full of balloons and streamers (and I do mean FULL- we fill up the floor with balloons!) and a big birthday sign- click here. Next is their special breakfast order- which you can see here. The birthday DAY is spent as a family field trip. The birthday kiddo picks where they want to go within “day trip” distance. These past birthdays we went to a local museum, nature center and train museum. Lunch is at a restaurant of their choice.
We like to have the big family birthday parties (inviting all the extra kin) on the weekend closest to their birthday but we reserve their actual birthday day for just our little family. The birthday dinner is their favorite foods and dessert is their choice too (not always cake either). And we don’t forget the very special birthday plate (square red glass plate) handed down from Daddy’s family and only brought out for birthdays! Daddy and his brothers used that plate for all their birthday dining growing up!
We close out the evening with a very special touch- The Daddy Blessing. The Daddy Blessing is a wonderful touching little ceremony in which we turn the lights down low and Daddy lights a special candle and then calls the child over to him. He then shares with us all that he loves about this child and some important highlights of their past year, how they’ve grown and matured and all that they have accomplished. He praises them and then putting his hands on their head- he prays an incredible prayer of blessing over them. This has become one of the kids most favorite treasured birthday rituals. Even the 3 year old eagerly anticipates this.
As for big ol’ birthday parties- We decided after some early craziness to have “friends parties” on their 5th, 10th, 13th, 16th birthdays only.
Their Daddy makes their birthday cakes each year- its tradition and he’s made some ingenious ones, like a strawberry, a barn and a bath tub with rubber ducky just to name a few.
Here’s a couple more links to some other birthday posts here on the homestead.

How fun are your birthdays?! I love the birthday breakfast door hanger! Just like at a hotel. And I like the idea of family only on the actual birthday and then sharing the weekend with others. I just like ALL your ideas! I'm going to remember those as my daughter gets older. Thanks for sharing! (and thanks for visiting me, too!)

We do a similar special day at our house too with immediate family only on the actual day and if we feel like doing anything extra, we might. I like the annual highlights and prayer. Friends of ours do this really well and we keep meaning to. Will have to remember that for this year.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
