Our Goings On

It has been a very busy week here on the homestead. My time on the computer has been spent doing youth or school work. We’ve been polishing up the girls portfolios as we will be having them on display after the homeschool group musical tomorrow nite. I’ve given up on finishing our school scrapbook in time- it’s just not possible to get it all done. I felt a ton of relief after “allowing” myself to let it go today. Thank you Lord for reminding me of my priorities.
Mr. Steady had an MRI this morning and they found he has 2 bulging discs in his back. They have made an appt. for him to see a neuro surgeon in 2 weeks. He kept his massage therapy appt. for this afternoon and the therapist believes she can help him. We are praying that is so- we just can’t imagine back surgery. He is already moving around a lot better this evening so we are very hopeful.
I am at a loss as to how to be helpful to my husband right now. It is very difficult to see him in so much pain and not be able to do anything to help ease it.
My days are spent in prayer- it is all constantly on my mind.

Back help?

10:51 AM, 2007-Apr-27 .. Posted by Lynne
About 4 years ago, I had extreme pain in my arm and numbness in my fingers on the right side. It was so painful it felt like someone was hammering a nail in my elbow, and it was very painful to drive a car.
My primary care MD first recommended muscle relaxants, then a MRI (bulging disk at C7 in my neck), then physical therapy, and finally surgery.
In my job, I interact with surgeons, so I called up my favorite neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins. I was told it would be 4 months for an appointment, but since he knew me from work he wanted me to bring in my MRI so he could take a look at it before my appointment. The surgeon called me and said he would do the surgery, but, if I could tough out the pain a while longer, I should try a chiropractor or accupunture first. He said he has absolutely no idea why either of these work, but they do work for some people, and if effective I could avoid surgery. He said most people just want the pain to end, so they want surgery immediately.
I got the name of a chiropractor a friend recommended, and I took my MRI in to her. She said she was 90% certain that she could get rid of my pain. She wanted me to come in twice a week for 4 weeks, then once week for 8 weeks, then once month for 10 months. She said my pain would not be gone after 4 weeks, but it would be greatly reduced and it would be about 1 year before I would be pain free.
I only was willing to try this because the surgeon said it might help and couldn't hurt, but I did not expect it to work. Now I still don't understand why it worked for me, but I am totally pain free. I go back about once every 2-3 months now.
Basically, the reason I had pain was because a disk was bulging out on the right side of my neck at C7, and it was pressing on a nerve. My chiropractor was able to move that disk just slightly back to the left so it no longer pressed on the nerve.
I don't know if this can help your husband, but I certainly do understand his constant pain (24 hours a day, very difficult to sleep because the pain wakes you up). I hope he is able to get relief from his pain.

Back trouble

Amy, I hope your husband continues to feel better. Like I told you before I too have two bulging discs and was scheduled for surgery but chose the chiropracter, physical therapy route along with message. it is still an on going process but I have better days than not. My brother-in-law and sister have recently in the last year use accupuncture and it has helped them. He has shoulder pain and now has none and can do push ups. Whatever you both choose I will pray for healing for your dh.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
