Facts about bad handwriting

11:09 AM, 2007-Apr-18 .. Posted in Homeschooling .. 2 comments .. Link

We have a wonderful handwriting program that we use in our homeschooling (Reason for Handwriting). My daughter, Sassafras, has the most beautiful handwriting; she takes such care and pride in her printing and is very excited about learning cursive this next school year. Maiden can write beautifully when she takes the time, especially her cursive, but her printing- when she's in a hurry to get done- is less than stellar. That, coupled with her creative spelling, makes me have to ask her to translate her own assignments at times. I often say to her, "Write not so that you can read it- but so that others can!"
Today in my inbox was the Homeschool Minute from TOS and the topic was handwriting. I wanted to share their statistics on bad handwriting:

According to Kate Gladstone, handwriting repairwoman and national director of the World Handwriting Achievement Contest, handwriting instruction might be neglected in today's classrooms, but it's hardly unnecessary. Each year in the United States, Gladstone says that:

  • the health of at least 1 in 10 Americans is endangered by the poor handwriting of their physicians.
  • up to $95,000,000 in tax refunds are not delivered because of unreadable tax-forms.
  • $200,000,000 in time and money is lost because poor handwriting results in such problems as confused and inefficient employees, phone calls made to wrong or non-existent numbers, and letters and packages delivered to incorrect addresses -- or not delivered at all.

Interesting facts aren't they?

I remember when my sister and I were growing up, my dad would make us practice our handwriting until he thought is was neat, we didn't homeschool either! Handwriting has always been a very important thing to him. Whether we like it or not, people judge us by our handwriting (if they don't know us already). If you are filling out forms or writing letters and that person can't see/meet you in person, the style of your writing can say alot about you. I now get compliments all the time on my handwriting (when I write in cursive) and I owe it to my dad.

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
