Home Sweet Simple Home

Thursday School

Another school day in the life . . . . . only one more day of school to go this week! If you haven't read the previous posts of the glimpse into our homeschooling week- just click on the homeschooling category in my sidebar to catch up!

7:20 am- Mama rolls over and lays in bed praying for strength to make it thru the day. She is tired and worn out. There is a cold, cold rain. (At least it’s not snow!) She decides today is a sleep in day. She turns the kids’ alarm off and goes back to bed- pulling the covers up to her chin. She falls back to sleep quickly.
8 am- Mama rolls out of bed, throws the covers up and tosses the throw pillows on top. There. Done. She gets dressed and follows the scent of coffee blindly . . . .
8:15 am- Mr. Conductor cries out for Mama and wakes the girls up. They tumble bumble down the stairs together. Mama realizes that they are getting up at the same time they did yesterday yet without the complaining. Mr. Conductor marches his own self to the potty and does his business all by himself. Mama prays that this is a sign of a good day.
8:25 am- Mr. Conductor is dressed and runs to the table to eat his breakfast. The cat meows loudly at him and Mr. Conductor hops down and runs to feed him. Mama prays again that this will be a good day.
8:44 am- The girls have finally finished getting dressed and have started breakfast. Mr. Conductor is just about finished with his. Mama is still nursing that first cup of coffee as she goes over the schedule for the day.
9:06 am- Sass has gone to brush her teeth and Maiden is cleaning up in the kitchen. I am setting out the play-dough and tools at the kitchen table for Mr. C.
9:10 am- Maiden reads devotions (Keys for Kids) aloud while I comb the snarls from Sassafras’s hair. [Maiden has really taken over leading the kid’s devotions over the course of the school year- I am now the clarifier of scripture instead. It works for us. It is interesting to hear what Maiden gleans from her devotions and how she leads Sassafras in understanding what she read. I am pleased.]
9:25 am- The girls start math (2 pages each).
10:10 am- Maiden has math finished (another perfect score- Wha-hoo! This is unprecedented!). Sassafras hasn’t finished yet. I have her set it aside for later and move on to spelling. Maiden started working on her history text for today (Story of the USA book 3- Ch. 3:The Chicago Haymarket Massacre) and struggled a bit so we went over it together. She is learning about the beginnings of unions and such. Deep stuff but she and I are finding it interesting. She is doing 2 years of American History condensed into one year (Sonlight Core 3+4)- so we work at a pretty fast clip, a couple of weeks ago we were hip deep in the Civil War and now it’s unions!
10:40 am- Sass works on her handwriting assignment. Maiden brings her Story of the USA for me to correct and we do her spelling together.
10:55 am- Maiden and I work through her language arts exercise as Sassafras helps Mr. Conductor with his computer game.
11:15 am- Sass reads aloud from The Best Trick, and then we work through her language arts exercise. Maiden helps Mr. Conductor with his computer game. She has finished her schooling for the day except for the reading she will do during quiet time.

11:30 am
- Sassafras and I work on Science as Maiden cleans up and puts away her school tub and generally picks up (without me asking her too!) the dining room.
11:45 am- School is done and all put away except for Sassafras’s history that she wants to her daddy to read to her later. Maiden gets the mail and finds we got a kiddo movie from Blockbuster.
Noon: The kids have made a grab-n-go lunch and are having lunch and a movie. I usually allow them 2 school days during the week that they can have lunch and a movie (we try to stick with a short educational movie but not always). When the weather improves (and it will!) we’ll be having our lunch outside and a free-for-all play time instead of movies. This crazy weather is making us stir crazy and we’ve got some hefty doses of cabin fever (Mama included).
1:30 pm- We have an early quiet time today. Mama’s not feeling very well (upset stomach). The girls go off to listen to their CDs together and Mama reads Mr. Conductor a story.

I checked out the history books you use. I really like them! I have them saved on mt CBD wishlist for when my kids have finished their current history.
Thanks for posting about them!

My Husband (DH)-
Mr. Steady

My rock and biggest supporter. The glue that keeps the family sane. He is like deep, deep water- it takes a lot to see a ripple.

DD11- Our Maiden in Waiting- By the world's standard she's a 'tween'. By ours and the Lord's- this is the time of her years of preparation. She is eagerly learning what it means to keep a home and daily becomes more and more of a helper to her Mama.

DD8- Sassafras My Sassy middle child. She holds her own so sweetly and has such an empathetic heart. While real Sassafras is used for flavoring- She is that added spice of flavor to our family.

DS4- Mr. Conductor- The train aficionado in the family. He likes to think he's in charge and often is! He's also the biggest Oreo fiend in the family.
