What do you pay for Milk?

9:45 PM, 2007-Feb-5 .. Posted in Homekeeping .. 14 comments .. Link

In a previous post I mentioned that I buy milk for around $2.00/gallon. I'm finding out that some shoppers pay more than that- sometimes more than double that! KimMC shared that a gallon of milk costs $5.19 where she lives in Canada! Yikes!
I just purchased milk at Meijer today on sale for $1.88. Wish I could ship it to you Kim!
So here's some normal costs for me in this area and for where I shop.
Milk $2.00
Eggs $ .98 (although I bought 4 doz. a little over a week ago for 69 cents at Aldi's but thats a bit unusual.)
Loaf of wheat bread 69 cents @ Aldi's.
Can of Cream of Mushroom (or chicken or potato) Soup 44 cents @ Aldi's.
4 pound bag of frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts $12.88 @ Meijer (but I only purchase when it's BOGO)
Can of Chicken broth 39 cents @ Aldi's.
Shredded cheese (2 cups) $1.58 @ Walmart.
These are just a few staples- so is what I pay low or the norm? What do you pay? Share with me in my comments or write about it yourself and leave a comment letting me know where to check it out!

$2.93 for a half gallon of Stonyfield Farm organic 2% milk at Sam's Club (they only carry 2%)

$3.65-$3.69 for a half gallon of Stonyfield Farm or Organic Valley organic skim, 1%, or whole milk at Wild Oats or Publix

Organic is not available in gallon size here, although it used to be.

Gallon of regular milk - $2.99
Gallon of organic milk - $5.29
Dozen regular eggs - $2.19
Dozen organic eggs - $4.29
Generic loaf of bread - $.99
These are regular prices - I bought 4 dozen organic eggs last week for $.99/dozen!
I'd love to see what others are paying...

Prices

Whole Foods had milk on sale for $2.50 for January. I prefer buying it there b/c even their private label dairy has no BGH. If it's not on sale, regular price is $3.29-$3.59. I've noticed since gas prices have fallen, so has the price of milk, a little.

Eggs: 18 brown, cage-free eggs are $3.29. Lowest supermarket private label is $0.99/doz. Farm fresh eggs in warm weather: $3/doz and worth more.

I think your other prices are lower than what I pay. I can get chicken that low, but it has to be a special.

Wow, Amy!!! I can't believe you are getting milk that cheap.
Milk at Walmart is $3.43 a gallon for 2%
I get fresh eggs from a dear friend for a $1.00 a dozen. I wish I could find somone with a cow. I would pay more for unpasteurized fresh milk. Anyway, I try to grind and bake our bread but I do buy 1 loaf of Nature's Own for $2.00 a week.
Blessings,
Trixi

I pay $5 for organic, raw milk and $2.25 per dozen of organic, free range eggs from local farmers. They even deliver to my door.

Price of Milk

Boy, do I wish I could have your groceries shipped to Maine. Milk is $4.15 a gallon here. Not quite as much as Kim pays in Canada, however bad enough here. We have tried stretching it using powdered milk. None of us could aquire the taste. I do use it for baking though.
As far as eggs go, they were $1.95.

It varies on the area

Amy, One thing I can tell you for sure is that grocery pricing varies on the area. Unfortunately, Annapolis is considered "greater DC" even though we are 25 miles away, and we have DC pricing. My job requires me to travel 2 hours away to DE and the eastern shore of MD. Whenever possible, at the end of the work day, I shop in DE or MD eastern shore because prices are lower there. Also, DE has no sales tax. MD has no sales tax on food.
For example, our dog like Iams canned food. The local WalMart sells it for 99 cents, DE sells it for 77 cents plus no 5% sales tax. In general, I have found everything to be priced lower in the more rural areas, which fortunately for me, have a Super WalMart. The problem I have had is it is too far to bring back frozen foods, and refrigerated foods are problematic in the summer. Much to my delight, my area is getting a Super WalMart (under construction). Our local newspaper says this will bring grocery prices down in our area because of the competition. I hope so.
On another note, we got our church's newsletter this weekend. In 2006, we had 55 new members, 35 of which joined on profession of faith (new Christians, not transfers). We also had a budget surplus of $50,000. In prior years we just made the budget. Some of the money will be used to buy a new church van as our old one is 14 years old. It is used to pick up elderly people and bring them to church services/functions. It is also used by youth group on mission trips.
Our church has made a huge effort to be "friendlier" to visitors. One big change is that we started the "Calvary Cafe". From 8 am to 11:30 am in our fellowship hall there are long tables filled with hot tea, coffee, assorted juices, hot chocolate, cheeses, donuts, coffee cakes, assorted fruits, granola bars, lunch meats, etc. It brings people together to meet and talk and make friends. The kids especially love it because it is like a buffet, take whatever you want. There is a basket in the middle of the tables for donations. Despite initial fears, every week more money has been collected than what is spent on the food. Everyone loves it. If you oversleep, no problem, have breakfast at church. More people are staying after church services, getting snacks, and carrying them into adult and kid education classes offered between the two morning services. Do you have any more suggestions for new ideas our church can try? It is exciting to see our church, an older established church, grow. This year programs are being started to develop fellowship among young adults - 20 somethings. That seems to be the group least likely to attend church.

$2.89 here in North EastOhio

To answer your question...

You can buy milk here for $1.99 to $2.29 a half gallon. I buy Lactaid milk as my oldest daughter (also the major milk drinker) is Lactose intolerant. It is now $3.99 a half gallon. Two weeks ago it was $3.79; two years ago it was $3.39. Oh, I forgot, our government says inflation is low. Apparently they don't eat.

Some Food prices

Eggs $1.50/dozen
Loaf of wheat bread $1.99
Cream Soup 89 cents
3 pound bag of frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts $12.95.

To Lynne- Church

Lynne- It sounds like your church is doing a great job! The 20-something crowd is always the hardest to include (I think it is also the most diverse- some married, some in college, some in careers, some already divorced etc.). One of the best ideas for attracting young families is parenting type classes/small groups.
One of the things I really enjoy doing with my youth group is putting on lunch for the Seniors in our church family. Our senior citizens then “hang out” with my teens and each learn from the other. We play a couple of ice-breaker type games and I just watch people learn from different generations. It is by far one of my coolest/most touching experiences as a youth pastor.
Right now my church is looking at the old mandate of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and a new mandate of “If it ain’t workin’ for ya- let it go and try something else!” It is making for some very interesting discussions. The main point is no matter what your church size is- does someone feel welcome when they sit in your pews? And it sounds like your church is very welcoming.

Our prices for milk around $2.39 a gallon,

My bread that I purchase is $1.43 Wal-mart
Kroger's brand for the same is $2.48 if I go to Kroger then I get their brand for $0.99. I try to buy whole grain.

Orange juice is around $3.70 to $4.00 for a half gallon
this I don't understand even though the oranges were freezing, don't they make it out of frozen oranges?

Eggs anywhere from $0.89 to $2.00.
I usually get a package of 18 at Wal-Mart for $1.48

I pay for a bag of skinless boneless chicken breast $7.00. I can get it for about the same price at Kroger's or Wal-Mart. I just watch the prices.

I usually buy generic brands unless I have a coupon and it will save me more money.

Kroger has these cards to where you can save additional money if you use their card. Anything to save a few cents or dollars.

I just loved reading everyone's replies! Ok prices up here are
Milk 5.19 a gal
organic milk 9.99 a gal I can't even think of buying this! We go through 3 gallons a week and that's being careful with it. So organic is just to much $ right now. I sure miss having our own goats and can't wait to get back to a place we can have them again. It's illegal up here to sell or give a way raw milk :-(.

Eggs, 1 doz mediums are 1.89 at the cheapest grocery store (Food Basics), Large are over 2 but I found our local general store sells farm fresh eggs for 2.00 a doz and they are huge! :-)
Last time I checked organic eggs were around 6.00 a doz. We go through 7 doz a week just for breakfast for the 5 of us, more when I bake a lot.

A loaf of cheep white bread is 1.45, whole wheat is about double that.

I don't buy cream soups often (I make white sauce), last I remember I think around .80 for no name.

Frozen bone less/skin less chicken breast are close to 4.00 a pound. I normally buy chicken leg quarters for .97 a pound instead.

I buy cheese in 1 pound blocks for just under 7.00 (no name), shredded cheese is much more.
