Any Mulberry Lovers Out There?

As a child, I loved mulberries.  During mulberry season, you could bet that every spare minute would be spent under the mulberry tree behind the school across the road, stuffing my face.  I was forever bringing home bowls of mulberries and begging my mom to make them into something.  She never did; she would simply encourage me to eat as many fresh berries as I could hold.  Perhaps because of this, I have neglected to utilize my mulberry trees here on our little acreage as I should.  Oh, one year I made spiced mulberry jam, but it never got eaten, as I'm not terrible fond of seeds on my toast.  This year, my own little ones are big enough to trek to the mulberry tree on their own.  The two eldest even climb the tree, and sit happily among the branches for hours at a time.  Their hands are stained purple, their clothes are stained purple, and when they use the toilet. . . you guessed it. ;)
Through my children, I have re-discovered my childhood love for mulberries.  We have made mulberry jelly (goodbye, seeds!), mulberry pancake syrup, and are considering canning mulberry juice.  We tried mulberry ice cream- I didn't put in enough berries, they said!  Mulberry pancakes were good.  Next up- mulberry muffins.  I'll let you know how they turn out!

YES!

I noticed our berries are almost ripe as well. My little one found some droppings from the wind beneath the tree. We have several trees in fact on our farm... maybe 3 big ones and a few starters around the place as well. She came in with three handfuls of assorted shades of ripeness and said... the berries are ready! LOL. I plan to make jelly as well. I'd love a secret for making syrup. I don't quite get that yet... other than using failed jellies. Is there a particular recipe you used to make syrup? Please share! I can start canning by the end of the week, I am sure!

ps... do you eat the stems or do you slide the berry pieces off and throw the stem out? My texture preference does not like the stem... so I spew it out, LOL. Love the juice, however.

Warmly, ~Melissa

That reminds me of my oldest DS. We use to live in a house where we had a mulberry tree. My DS was 2 yrs old at the time and he would sit in the yard for hours trying to climb that tree for the berries. The faster I picked them for him, the faster he ate them and wanted more, lol.
Mulberry jelly sounds yummy. Makes me wish for our tree back. I made mulberry muffins and pancakes, yummy!

Mulberry Syrup

I use my mulberry jelly recipe for syrup, and only put in half the pectin. A friend gave me this recipe, and it works quite well.

Invitation to The Carnival of Home Preserving

Posted by FoggyMountainFarm on Friday, July 11, 2008 at 12:05 - Link

Growing up, my parents had a mulberry tree that grew on the side of the hillside and hung over the garage. My brothers and I would climb on the roof of the garage and just have us a fine ol' time eating mulberries.

I haven't had a mulberry in years as that tree died and dad tore down the ol' garage it hung over. I was just telling my husband and children about this time in my life a few weeks ago. I miss those carefree days.

I also want to invite you to participate in the first edition of the The Carnival of Home Preserving that will be posted at Laura Williams' Musings on Monday July 14th.
