I am finding that it takes longer to make a meal when it all come from the garden and orchard. It all has to be picked and washed and prepared. The other downside to eating all from the garden is you are hungrier sooner...We are enjoying it, though. The kids enjoy eating what they know we grew ourselves. Here is a picture of all the ingredients for today's lunch:
I did use a little oil and breading meal. When I start growing lasagna noodles I will really know we can be self sustained . Yes, we did eat those zucchini blossoms. They are delicately delicous, I might add. We breaded them and cooked them on both sides in the skillet. Christina really thinks it's so neat and tasty. She had me serve them to our guests for lunch the other day. They were all pleasantly surprised at how good tasting they were. They were also amazed that there are male flowers and female flowers. That bit of information only came out when they voiced concern that I was reducing the possible crop. I told them I only pick the male flowers and that I sometimes pollenate the female flowers to ensure production. You learn something every day.
Don't you love the color of the bright lights swiss chard?
I always thought urban homesteaders were just country wanna be's. But I learned that there is more to it recently. There are actually people who garden and have farm yard critters in the city and live off their postage stamp lot. These people live on a 5th of an acre and their garden takes up 1/10 of the acre: Urban Homesteaders They do very well for themselves and actually provide food for the local restaurant. Of course, they live in So. Cal. where the weather is condusive to year-round gardens, but still! I haven't completely figured them out. They are Sabbath keeping, vegetarian tithe payers... yet, I don't quite get their philosophy of life. Interesting, though. Their city garden is impressive!
