Just had to post pictures of these racoons. They were the cutest things and they were not too afraid. The mother never blinked an eye about us bringing our three canoes close to where she was busily rubbing things in the water. Her babies ran up into their little hideout a few times and one at a time cautiously came down the bank out of curiousity. The mother was not all that big for a racoon. She had obviously seen canoes before.
It was a challenge to take clear pictures in a canoe rocking on the water. I took so many pictures but many of them were blurry. There were 4 babies scampering around. Sometimes they would swat at each other and other times they were biting their mom's tail.
There were several does with their fawns along the bank of the river. I think we got this picture just past where the Tumwater joins the Icicle to create the Wenatchee River. The fawns are never completely in the open... this was the best I could get.
We enjoyed a blue heron, many kingfishers and various swallows and chimney swifts. Here is where some of the swallows nest. We could see tons of claw marks trying to reach up to the nest holes. I am pretty sure it would be raccoon that would try to raid the nests.
The Icicle is getting low, but we managed to direct the canoe so that we did little bottom scraping. There was a place in the Wenatchee where it is full and deep that we almost hit a rock or two. It came up so suddenly and the current so swift we were almost sure of a swim, but thankfull we missed them by a hair.
We had friends along with us and ended the day with a picnic.
There's nothing like spending the Sabbath afternoon in nature.
