Stocking up for Hard Times

My husband asked me what I would buy and how much room it would take buy $1000 worth of food. I am at a bit of a loss. Just food I guess, not other emergency supplies like candles & batteries. I said I would research it but I don't know where to start. I would prefer canned goods I think.

So far for us rice, beans, sugar and salt would be good. I do have canning supplies, I have been canning for years and have a dehydrator. We also have a cider press. Seems like canning lids would be good to have a supply of. I also have a calf outside and goats. We just put 35 chickens in the freezer. We have and can get more wheat berries anytime. DH just planted 20 apple trees yesterday. We already have a few fruit trees. Got a big garden and seeds too. I think pet food would be good to have extra of? I think my DH was thinking of cases of canned chili or something like that for the in between times.

Anyone else have some ideas for us? What do you do? Websites to look at for ideas?

I too have been trying to figure out just what and how much to store. I have been able to store about 2 months of meals. They would only be good if we had electricity.

I figure that if you made a one month menu, detailing every meal and item that you would need for those meals, you could multiply it by 12 months.

That would be 768 meals. Or 3 meals a day,21 meals a week, 64 meals a month. Break down each weeks menu with the items needed per meal. Then buy accordingly.(if you have that much money)

Does that make sense? I am still trying to figure it out myself.:- )

Let me know what you come up with.

Blessings,

I think 3 months would be good. DH said enough for a winter and then of course we have our "regular" food supply which is more than most. We need electricity for most of our meals too but I was thinking we could use the RV stove as a back-up if we re-fill the propane tanks. I checked out beprepared.com and would like to try some of the "meals in a can", it would add variety to the typical canned soups and chilies.

With the ice storm bearing down on us I too took measure of our stores. I found that with our charcoal BBQ and cast iron I could cook just about anything. With our fireplace and blankets we could weather quite a storm. As for any ideas about large amounts of food, also consider storage so that your food is not eaten by the local mouse population.

God bless

Question?

What are you storing up for? A bad winter or due to the economy? My husband and I as a general rule keep apprimately a months worth of canned goods on hand. We have discussed many possibilities with regards to the economy and I am just curious as to whether we are the only ones considering such possibilities.... I love to share ideas.
