When did your child start grasping phonics?

My son is nearly 6 years old. He is very good at math & smart as a cookie. However he doesn't seem to be grasping phonics at all. Is this normal? My fellow friends say their kids were reading by six. I know they learn at different rates. When we work on his letters he just starts rambling guesses of every letter he can think of. So we have set it aside for now. I read to him a lot & he practices writing his letters off & on too. We are very patient...it's just our daughters were getting it down by this age & I wanted some input from some other Moms out there.

Our 9 year old boy wasn't doing too well at phonics or reading at that age, either. We used "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons". I don't know if it was the book or if it just kicked in. He loves to read now. Our 7 year old girl still doesn't get phonics as well as she should and we're using the same book. Reading is a struggle for her. (And me. :)) As adults, it won't matter if they learned to read at 4 or at 8. And of course-pray. (For patience :) )

I am enjoying reading your blog. We will be starting home schooling in the new school year 2007 here in Australia. I wont be any help inregards to your question. My daughter is in grade one at the moment & doing really well. My son is only 4. I have noticed though that he hasn’t learnt as much as my daughter did at his age. I have been told though that the majority of boys can be slower in developing academically than girls...Anyway I have all that to look forward too...lol! I hope someone has some good advice for you as I will copy it down for future reference (grin!)
have a good day
Helen

Thank you for your kind words. I have 3 daughters and their ages are alomst 17, 12 and 7. They are blessing from God and I love that we spend our days together doing everything. My oldest just started her first job, working a few hours a week. We already miss her around here in the afternoons. But, they do grow up.

Stop again soon.
Much blessings and love

my 4 yr old sounds like yours - math without thinking and really smart - and not doing the reading thing. He has computer games he plays to help him, but he hasn't cracked the reading code. He does love to write, so I have him write grocery lists, letters to family, etc, spelling out every word for him. I am hoping that he will learn to read by writing (I know that sounds backwards, but that is why we're homeschooling, eh?) Yours sounds like he is enjoying writing the letters, so try that. Good luck.

Your son sounds like mine, I'm not an expert but from what my dh and I have observed from talking with other hs moms in our group, kids seem to take off in one area like math or language skills while the other area lags behind a bit. And about 3rd or 4th grade both skill seem to even out.
Keep plugging away, he's using his math side of his brain a bit more right now. You'll see him hit a wall of sorts and the language part will start to pick up.
Keep reading out loud to him and keep at those phonics it will come. (my dd took 2 years to pick up reading, I was ready to scream!!!!! But once it clicked she can't put a book down.)

I agree - reading aloud is wonderful - enjoyable for all. Both my children I've always homeschooled (now 13 & 16) love to read; I read to them a lot books they liked - the library is wonderful. They both took the initiative in their own way. Luke was 7 when he read on his own and Angela about 5 - she wanted to read the American Girls book by herself - that's how she started. She also made ABC books, cutting pictures out of magazines. We could talk about different things, like the g in giraffe and goat - the same letter but different sounds. Have fun!

In due time ...

My youngest read "late", now at 11 years old - he's ALWAYS reading. He learned from the 'whole language' approach. Spelling - we use thematic/sequential spelling, one size does not fit all ;-) Different kids grow in different area's first. In the end, it'll catch up with everything else.

hello,
my wife tried a phonics program and it just wasn't working well. My son listened to this leap frog DVD that sounded out all the letters and he loved it and he watched over and over. We just were working with him and now he is writing letters very well and is interested in spelling out words. I am working with him to put the letters together. They will get it!
God Bless,
Jason

Truth be told...

my youngest son didn't grasp phonics until after he could read. There are sight words flash cards on the net. Here's one site http://specialed.about.com/od/literacy/a/dolch.htm.
Here, there is a Dolch word bingo to play

Aha, I found it - Jan Brett's site - you have to check it out!
