Life and times of a new farmer/homesteader

Heyas; and a general thank you

How's it going?  I'm well, thanks.  Beware the ides of March.  At least if you are the emporer of Rome.

I'm heading into town tomorrow, and as such I won't be around for a couple days.  I will be picking up some of my bushes and my trees for this year.  I'm pretty excited.  It doesn't take much to excite me, granted, but I'm pretty justified in being excited about this.

My father, son, and I are going to a local tree nurseries open house on Saturday.  We will learn how to take care of fruit bushes and trees.  My father will also spend some time in a seminar on mushroom growing.  While he is doing that, I will be learning about grafting fruit trees.  I'm not certain what my son has decided he will be doing, but I'm sure he will enjoy himself.

This weekend is when I will pick up the last of my seeds, grains, trees, vines, and bushes for my homestead for the spring.  I still have some stuff on order that hasn't arrived yet, but the ordering and deciding is over for now, and now it's time to get busy planting.  I may grab the occasional start, when something unusual comes up, but for the most part I will be using what I have.  The "busy" season is starting.  Granted, there really isn't much slack time, ever, but as the day lengthen and the weather gets warmer, I will be spending most of my time outside.

I will try to make time for the blog, e-mails, and my other groups.  I will also make time for reading all of your wonderful blogs.  If I seem to slack off a bit here, keep in mind that it's because I'm busy on the farm, and that I'm not going anywhere.  Things will continue, just not in the same prolific manner I have been writing in for a while.

This weekend, I get the rest of my fencing supplies, my trees and plants, and I will begin planting cold weather crops and starting more seedlings.  Hopefully I will have my pigs in two weeks.

I know that those who have been paying attention have probably noticed my posts tapering off.  In the depth of winter, I was posting as much as five posts a day.  Now, it's 1-3.  Soon, it will be one, maybe more if I have time and inspiration, and maybe even one every couple days if I am really busy.  I will be around.  I multi-task well.  If it takes me a couple days to get back to you on a personal message or e-mail, it's not because I'm ignoring you, it's just because I'm busy.  I will eventually get back to you.

In the mean time, I want to thank all of my friends and fellow bloggers for their kind words, their encouragement, their inspiration, their friendship, their teachings.  It's not something I say enough.  I can't imagine being able to say it enough.  The people I have met here have been so great, that words can't even begin to describe it.  I have met some of the greatest people here.

I have never been a part of any back to the land movement.  It's always just been something I have wished for and dreamed about.  If it hadn't been for that link on the NoNAIS website I followed back in early December, I may have never been a part of this community.  I appreciate each and every one of you.

Keep blogging.  I will.  It's so good to be a part of something far bigger than myself that I can't imagine leaving.  Every strange look I have ever recieved when explaining to people in real life that I really wanted to be a homesteader has been more than made up for by being here.  By being among people who share many of my ideas and ideals.  To share a wonder for that that is creation.

Thank you for being a part of my life, and thank you for accepting me as part of yours.  Here's to a prosperous growing season for all of us.  May your garden grow to the sky.

To end this post, I place a quote I first found on a dear friends blog here, and have used since as my e-mail signature:

"To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages, with open heart; to study hard; to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common--this is my symphony." ~ William Henry Channing

Peace and prosperity be with you all in the coming seasons.

Raymond

I could be at the seminar too, that sounds like so much fun. Maybe someone will have something like that in my neck of the woods.
You are a joy. How are your quiches coming along? I made one this morning. Yum!!!

(Raymonds edit:

Made one quiche, about a week ago, and it turned out well. Fed me for a couple days. The crust didn't turn out, but I tried something I saw on the side of a "Salteens" box, so I suppose I shouldn't have expected much. Think I might try a variation on pizza dough next for an egg pie.

My father gave me a chili rellanos recipe, which I have been asking him for for years. I think he was impressed on the quality of my eggs. The yolks are so much more yellow than anything I have ever seen before, and the flavor, oh the flavor.

Always looking for more egg recipes. I have been told there is an egg cookbook, but so far I haven't seen it.

Peace, Raymond)

Blessings,

Sherry

The growing season

AhhhYes, the busy season is near for we homesteaders.Time to get our hands and feet into the dirt.Working in the garden untill we can't see, then sitting on the porch and listening to all of the night sounds as the woods will be alive with them.Feeling and smelling the night air, just relaxings after a day of using the muscles and feeling great for doing it.Oh, I am getting soo excited here just thinking about it. Who could leave that to get on a computer to blog.

I think most of the homesteaders will be on here less and less each day as the earth gets ready for us to work it but I do hope they will not forget about their blogs forever.

I don't know why, but your comment made me think of sun tea. Evening on the porch, after a long day of work, reminds me of sun tea lol. Gallon jar, on the porch rail, filled with a dozen bags of black tea, a lemon cut in eighths, spring water, and a big ol' dollop of honey... Good memories. Maybe a sprig of mint in the glass... And three ice cubes. There for anyone who needs it during the day, and for sipping on while listening to frogs and the guitar in the evening.

It's been a long, cold winter. It's good to look forward to evenings on the porch. I hope my daughter brings her fiddle when she visits. Summer nights are good for music.

Enjoy the busy season. Peace.

Busy, busy!

I fully understand the busy spring season. Even tho I'm an urbanite, I find myself busy with preperations for the garden, going thru my canning jars and double checking seed stock.
Your seminar sounds like fun. I wish we had something like that around here. Our community college once in a while has ag classes but they are pretty expensive.
Your recipe from yesterday sounds wonderful! Count me in as one who likes edibles - ever try a dandelion salad?? Yummy. Growing up we had a elderly couple who owned a cottage up the road from us and they came up from Illinois for the summer. Every year they made the most wonderful dandelion wine. Sigh.....
Thanks for the great posts - oh, and thank you for responding on mine. What a nice suprise as I don't expect anyone to respond let alone find my blog interesting LOL.

(I love dandelion greens in my salads, They have great flavor, and aren't too bitter when you pick them right. I've never made dandelion wine, but I might make some this year. I wonder what dandelion wine vinegar would taste like. Similar to tarragon vinegar, I imagine, but different enough to be worth trying. Peace.)

I am going to post about the music loving family I have either today or tomorrow. Something I never thought about posting before.

Thanks

I have noticed you slacking with your posts. I am surprised you even have time to blog with all that you have on the go on your homestead! I'm kinda jealous of your time management skills, actually! I decided to ditch my blog awhile back because I was spending too much time on the computer and daydreaming about all the projects I wanted to do. Now I have so much more time for cooking and doing things around the house. Couple more weeks and I'll be out in the garden and working on my plants in the greenhouse!
