A few questions about Guineas

06:30, Sunday, February 3, 2008 .. Posted in The Farm .. 2 comments .. Link
My daughter has decided that she has to have guineas.  Now I know that you can't give your child everything that they want but are guineas as bad as I have heard?  I have heard that they talk all of the time and can be very annoying.   We have quite a few coons around, will that be a problem?  Can they be near chickens?  Are there any weird habits I should know about?  Most of our neighbors and family say that we will regret the decision but I think they are cute.  Any advice?

and I loved them. Yes we heard the horror stories, too. I think it is all in one's attitude that really makes them work or not.

Are they noisy... ya, I suppose, they chatter alot... especially when strangers came about. We particularly like that... as we were alerted to strangers... our dog didn't do the greatest job at that! (happy dog).

Ours liked to roam free... jumped the chicken fence quite a bit and just roamed on their own around the farm. They can fly up a bit better than chickens and like to roost in the trees... or on the swingset... LOL.

As for raccoons... we did have raccoons, but whether it was the coons or the dogs??? They are pretty good at chasing some predators away with their shrieking and they are less afraid of them, than say chickens. (will charge with beaks). But, ya, a raccoon got a couple when in the barn locked up... the coon got in and they (chickens and guineas) couldn't get out or away from their predator.

Our experience... we liked them and hope to find some more at a bird swap... buying just guineas is rather expensive and we have a bird swap in our area to which people bring chicks, chickens, geese, ducks, parakeets, you name it, it is there... and you can buy just one or several from the different sellers. I think that is where we got our last pair... they had some chicks and we had around a dozen or more and then the dogs started going after them (a new dog to the house) and we lost them all. I say go for it...! *grin*

Warmly, ~Melissa

I know that mom2countrykids has guineas. When I have visited they seem to "talk" all the time. While one of her sons complained and said that they annoyed him to no end, she told me that she doesn't even notice them anymore.
