Not working.....

Well, I've tried photobucket and I still can't get a photo in my post.  I did put a picture of the puppies in my photo album if you want to see them.  Seems silly to only be able to upload one photo and call that an album, don't you think?   All of my photos are larger than the size allowed, even using photobucket I guess....

Update on Annie the cat.....

Well, it's been a while since I've been here I see!  Didn't mean to allow so much time between posts!  Well, since I last posted about our kitty troubles here's what she's been up to:  laying under my bird feeder  :(    finding field mice and bringing them up near the house to play with them, trying to take on a very large king snake, and getting fatter everyday.  Yep, we didn't realize when we decided to bring her here with us that she was pregnant.  She should have her kittens any day now, she can't get much larger.  Since a cat's gestation period is three months, she was already in her condition before we came.  Nothing we can do now except keep her comfortable and feed her more!  I don't have any idea what we will do with kittens, I know the girls will fall in love and want to keep them all! Just what I need!

We have had more new additions to the family since my last post.  My two youngest daughters have birthdays 17 days apart.  For their birthdays we decided they didn't need anymore toys, as they are very blessed, (and they have all of their older sisters toys besides their own!), and they needed more fun things to do outdoors.  So, we now have the two cutest Cocker Spaniel puppies in the world!  If I can figure out how to post our photos I will have to show you these adorable pups.  The girls love them and they seem like they are going to make great companions.

Well, that's it for now, going to go check out the changes around here and see if I can change my picture from a sheep!!

A Little Life Lesson.....

We thought this was going to be a life lesson for the younger girls, but I think it turned out to be a lesson more for my husband and me.  Funny how it turns out that way sometimes, don't you think?  While we were living in the rented duplex, a kitten found us.  Just showed up our of nowhere.  Of course the girls loved all over her.  I asked the neighbors if she belonged to them but nobody claimed her.  So we bought some food and a cute little dish and put a box with a blanket on the front porch.  The girls started calling her Annie, as in "Little Orphan Annie".  Not much later we returned home late one evening to find her waiting at the door.  I picked her up for a minute to scratch that itchy chin and then put her down.  When I did, I realized I had blood on my shirt.  I checked her over real good and sure enough, she had a b-b sized hole near her hip.  I cleaned it up and medicated it and she limped for a while, then recovered completely.  (If you are still reading this you must a soft heart for animals too!)  So, now weeks have gone by, she has been hanging around for a month and it is time for us to move into our new house.  What do we do?  Take her with us of course.  For three weeks we close her in the garage every night to make sure she doesn't get mistaken for prey.  Every morning we let her out and everything is fine.  Then, Saturday we cleaned out the garage.  Dh and I are tired of the litterbox in there and decide she is ready to stay outside.  That night we put her bed and food on the back porch, close up the garage and go to bed.  Sunday morning, getting ready for church -- no Annie.  Back from church, still no cat.  Not on Monday either.   Girls are sad.  Mom and Dad feel guilty.  DD#3 asks me if I think something got her and if it did, would it have hurt really bad or would she have died quickly?  Then she wants to know what if she is out there somewhere hurt and can't get home.  I try to comfort them, but at the same time want them to realize that sometimes life is sad and hard and pets can die.  So, Tuesday is about to end and we are all sitting around the table talking.  Dh is in the middle of a story and suddenly exclaims, "There's Annie!"  She is looking in the dining room window at us.  Of course we all jump up and run out back to pick her up.  She is hungry and a little skittish, but none the worse for wear.  Who knows where she has been for three days, or where she has slept for three nights, or what she may have eaten!  So, to end this very long story, Annie is back in the garage at night, safe from whatever may have chased so far from home that it took her three days to get back!  Daughters learned that God does answer their prayers, and mom and dad learned not to feed stray cats!!!

Beautiful Day!!

Finally!  Time spent outdoors in wonderful weather!  It was a mild 64 today so we took advantage of it by shortening school and going outside.  Our animals enjoyed it too, as we haven't been able to spend much time with them in the cold weather.  I took my dog, Abbie, across the creek where our livestock are for the first time since moving here.  She paid no attention to the horses or donkey, but was crazy for the goats!  Abbie is a big dog, about 75-80 pounds, so I couldn't let her actually "meet" them the way she wanted to.  She is half Boxer and half Bouvier Des Flandres, so I guess that makes her at least half of a herding dog.  I guess that is what she wanted to do, but until I am sure she wants to "herd" and not "hurt" them they will have to keep their distance.

I also had fun doing something I like to do which is clearing up the trees along the creek.  Pulling down vines and picking up deadwood is enjoyable and relaxing for me.  I think that I like that kind of work better than housework because you can actually see your results and they stick around awhile.  Must be why I prefer mowing to cleaning any day!

I was glad when we came in that I had put pizza crust in the bread maker earlier that day.  The house smelled of garlic, but it sure tasted good!

Hopefully we will have good weather tomorrow, as there is lots to do outside.  Build fence, refinish furniture, figure out where my wildflower beds are going to go.... But if we get the rain that is predicted (and needed)  we can always finish hanging the blinds, put the new computer together, and keep unpacking boxes!

Have a great weekend on your homestead!

Wierd Weather!

Is anyone else having this wierd weather we are having here in Arkansas?  On Thursday it was so warm that I wore capri's to town.  It got to 78 degrees, didn't even feel like February.  Then that afternoon a cold front came in and it was all over!  We got snow, then sleet on Saturday.  Our high on Sunday was 26!  We had big icicles hanging from the roof and had to keep breaking the ice on all of the animals water.  Not much fun taking care of them in that kind of cold, it hurts!  Today was better at 43, hopefully we are on our way back up.  I should be thankful for these kind of temperature changes, because that is one of the reasons we moved here.  Living in Arizona for 26 years made me long for seasons and the changes they bring.  I love that you can tell what season it is here, that the weather and trees change.  This is beautiful country and I am so glad God has brought us here.  Not much to update on the homestead as it has been too cold, and now muddy to get anything done.  Hope to get to building the fence for the sheep we are going to get.  That's it for now, have a great week!

Home Sweet Home!

What a blessing to have a comfortable home!  We have been here a little over a week and it already feels like home.  I was a little worried that a new house with new furniture would feel like being in a hotel, or visiting someone else's home!  But with a lot of hard work to put things away we were able to start back to schoolwork on Monday and it is going great!

Our two oldest daughters have their own rooms for the first time in 9 years.  I have to say there were no tears shed on their first night apart!  It was just, see ya!!  I guess I can relate to that, I remember when my little sister moved out of my room when I brother married.  I was glad to have some space to myself too.  They are having so much fun decorating in their own styles, which are not at all similar!  DD #1 is fifteen and has "classis" taste.  Chocolate brown carpet, brown, tan and mauve comforter, dark wood furniture....very tasteful.   DD #2 is 13 and has pink shag carpet, very bright flowered comforter, neon clock, lime green and white furniture...... very fun!  I'm glad the other 2 dds, 10 & 7, kept the wood bunkbeds, morning star quilts, and calm theme!

Anyway, we are glad to be here with our 3 horses, 1 donkey, 5 goats, 2 dogs, and 1 cat.  We can spend so much more time with them living here instead of 30 minutes away.  Hopefully we will be able to breed 2 of the does soon, as having kids would be such a great experience for the girls.  Also still planning to get some Katahdin sheep and as Anatolian Shepherd to guard them.  We've got more fence to build, that's for sure!

Well, I'll update soon on our projects outside and in!

Moving Day!

Praise the Lord, it's moving day!  We are very excited to finally be moving into our new home.  We prayed over it last night and are taking over about a million boxes today!  We probably won't be able to sleep there until tomorrow night, but just getting started is so wonderful.  So, I won't be posting until the new computer with the satellite internet is in, probably next Tuesday.  Thanks for all the nice welcomes and comments I've recieved since starting this blog.

We're Ready to Move!

Well, we are just days away from our move and we are so ready!  My dh said the driveway (gravel) is finished and the sod for around the house comes tomorrow.  That will be nice with all the winter mud and muck.  It has been so unseasonably warm that we probably won't have any snow this winter, but it has been a blessing for the workers on our house!  Anyway, the paint touch-ups should be finished and the carpet is to go in on Thursday.  Friday is scheduled as the final inspection  with closing on Monday.  Yeah!!!  We have been just over 6 months in this duplex and it is starting to fray our nerves!  This town only has 1800 people in it, but we are still longing to get out to the country!

First Time to Blog

Well, this is a first for me but here goes:

My name is Michele, I am a Christian wife and mother.  I have four daughters (ages 15, 13, 10 and 7) and we have always home schooled.  We are just two weeks away from moving into our house that we had built on our ten acres.  We are not new to country life, but plan to do more with our new land than we have ever been able to before.  We currently have 3 horses, 1 donkey and 5 pygmy goats.  We are planning to raise our own beef and also raise Katahdin sheep.  My 10 year old daughter would love to raise chickens and I would like fresh eggs, but I don't want a rooster around so I'm not sure about that.  I would love to hear from others with experience with chickens and especially with Katahdins. I guess I'll post more when there is more to post!

~Michele
