Chicken Tractors

I had an interesting conversation with one of my customers the other day about chicken tractors so I thought I'd post some pictures of the ones in our back yard.

This is our 4th chicken tractor and the best so far.  We tried to learn from our mistakes on the first three and came out with a good working tractor with this design.

You'll notice the  A-frame PVC chicken tractor in the photo below.  That was our first.  It was easy to build and fairly inexspensive, but not quite as study and functional as we had hoped.  We finally had the idea to back it up to an old pre-existing chicken coup and with the help of a roughly cut doorway, we have a new hen house with a protected outdoor area.  The hens like it alot.

Please let me know if any of you have any good ideas when it comes to chicken tractors.

See Ya'll - Tony

Love the pictures. I am still trying to decide which tractor I need. I must have 2 dozen pictures saved to my computer by now!! You'd think I would make up my mind.

I really like the "current" ckn tractor - really nice looking coop ~ We chose to build a 16X16 hen house and are fencing the yard. But we do have one large coop that we use for isolating and/or inbetween birds (1/2 grown chicks, etc.). How heavy is your current tractor? That's the big thing about having to move the coop - it currently is home to three roosters we were going to butcher and now I've decided to sell (they are too old to butcher now in my opin.). We're designing new coops to use w/increased flock - we'll have to rotate roosters and will want to pair up roos and hens when we're ready for breeding purposes. We are also planning to fence an adjacent yard to the original yard to accommodate the larger flock and to rotate the yards as well allowing for grass to grow continuously and prevent having a dirt yard. On extreme heat days of summer (like this last one...), we will open the gates and allow the flock to go wherever - they love the woods right behind the chicken yard when it's really hot.

Have you looked at the Deliberate Agrarian's chicken tractor? he uses wheels on his model ~

I felt for y'all on the horse adventure or rather misadventure - I had a few horse advent's as a preteen and am not a huge fan of the horse myself - I agree they are beautiful animals - but too big for me.
Have a great Sunday,
:)

That is one fine looking old weathered barn building you have there. I could look at old barns all day. The tractors look good, too, but the barn....it distracted me. Then I go on to read you are the boss' husband. If I were Nancy, I'd never come inside to blog, with that backyard calling my name.....

You and Nancy are crackin' me up this morning!!

Lewis Grizzard: The planet was a better place having read Grizzard's column; we were so blessed to have him for the time we had him when he wrote for the Atlanta paper every week. He was one of those people that everyone wanted to be somehow related to or have some kind of ownership affixed to him. I think one of his most famous running series of stories were those about his black lab, Catfish. All of Atlanta (I think all of Georgia!) mourned with him when Catfish died. LG was like everyone else and everyone felt like he was their next door neighbor - he was a master storyteller, always seemed to find the humor in everyday life and never too good to talk to anyone - he was rare. There hasn't been anyone like him writing in any paper since he left all of us. For sure, he is carrying on (hands waving about in the air) telling a tale today w/your Dad.

Thanks for sharing that ~ y'all have a great week!

I just found your blog and I am looking forward to following it! A fellow male blogger from Kentucky is cool!

I don't have any suggestions on chicken tractors, although I plan to post about our coop soon. We just have an old building as a coop with a little fenced yard and we let the chickens out to free range every evening. It has worked well so far, but we are still learning.

Welcome to homestead blogger!

hey tony
