What's going on with the country's milk? Are we having a shortage of dairy cows or something?
Today I went to Wal-mart for groceries. The name brand (Pet) milk was $6.18 a gallon! The generic milk was $4.08! I have never paid that much for milk in my life! I went home empty handed as far as milk was concerned.....
With three growing kids, we drink a lot of milk. Does anyone have any frugal ideas?

No frugal advice, but I understand that the rise in milk prices has to do with the rise in corn prices. Corn being the feed for the dairy cows. It really is awfully high, and here, at least, Wal-Mart's is actually higher than the other grocery stores. I guess I should be happy my kids have never been fond of drinking milk.

Dry milk can be used in place of cooking. I forget the size of the box, but is about $9 at walmart here and makes 5 gallons I believe (going off memory and without looking at one of our boxes).
You can also mix 1/2 dry with 1/2 whole milk and it's drinkable. It will take getting used too.

Other people commented about the dry milk. You can actually use dry milk for any baking that uses milk. I don't much care for drinking it.
At one of our stores here, milk is the same price for skim as it is for 2%, whole, etc. You can buy a half gallon of whole milk and add water to it to make it more like 2% or skim. If you add enough water to make it like skim milk, you will probably end up with almost a full gallon. I can do this a lot easier than the powdered milk when it comes to cereal. We don't use a lot of milk just by drinking a glass of it. We use it mostly for cereal, baking, etc. However, unless I can find some on sale tomorrow, we'll be going without the milk this week. We're going to do oatmeal, pancakes, and maybe some eggs and toast for breakfast.
Hope this helps!

Powdered Milk Question

Hi! Yes, with powdered milk you would need to reconstitute it unless you have a recipe that specifically calls for strictly the powdered form of powdered milk. Follow the directions on the powdered milk package to make milk. Then just use the milk like you would regular milk. Hope this helps!

Milk goats!! They don't take up too much room. 2 nubians give us about a gallon a day, just what our family needs. They are gentle and easy to milk, and don't take nearly as long as a cow does :)
