See Jane work

I don’t know about you, but I remember learning to read with Spot, Dick and Jane. So when this cute mug full of gumballs from my secret sister came in the mail today, it brought with it a little nostalgia.

And as the kids and I sat around the table looking at the mug and chomping down on the gumballs, it also brought a revelation. Two of my children recently had birthdays, so now my kids are ages 15, 12, and 4. Can you believe they had no idea who Jane was? While their ignorance of Jane certainly made me feel my age, it also made me feel almost sorry for them. They never got to “See Jane work,” or “see Spot run.” We just started homeschooling last year, so I have no idea what books helped my children learn to read at school. My family will go “back to school” next week, and I plan to focus on teaching my 4-year-old the alphabet. Learning to read won’t be far behind, as he is already raring to go. Hmmm… I wonder if I can find some old Dick and Jane books at a yard sale or thrift store.

Thank you, Secret Sister!

You can actually purchase the Dick and Jane books at Books A Million. Maybe some of the other large chains carry them too. I am glad to see they have been reprinted.
