I hope I can some feed back from the ones who have chickens. What do you all use on the flood of your chicken coop. Do you use clay cat litter, sawdust, wood chips or just nothing. I have not been using anything and it is hard to keep clean. I would like to find an easier way to clean out the poop. Which there is a lot of. I was thinking of using saw dust but I didn`t know if that would be good for the chickens. I was afraid that they might eat it. I hope to talk my hubby into building me a bigger coop. I want to increase my flock and I really need a bigger coop. Guess I will see how that one goes. Well I hope to hear from some of you.
Hello! I'm not sure if it's the best way, but for our floor we do several layers...The bottom layer is a sprinkling of lime...I just keep it in an old sock and dust it around the floor like I would dust flour on a cake pan (I wear a dust mask for this). On top of the lime, we do a layer of corn cob bedding (from the feed store). Then on top of the CCbedding, we put a layer of straw. In the colder months, we just add fresh straw on top of the old straw and then do a thorough spring cleaning when the weather breaks (sometimes in January, sometimes March, depends on weather)...but they get a fresh layer of staw weekly in that time, so it's always fairly fresh.
In the warmer weather, we fork out the staw once a week or so. The corn cob bedding is replaced in the fall, and sometimes added in the summer if it's getting low (we pitch it out if it's dirty when we fork out the straw).
We've had good luck with this method and have never had a smell issue, even when they go for several months with just adding fresh straw. The straw is easy to clean out, we just use a pitch fork.
That might not be much help, but I wanted to let you know what we do.
we use nothing, it seems to be the best for us.We have used straw before and that was a huge mistake. We do put lime down on the dirt floor were we need to walk, but that is it. Every time it rains hard our chicken house floods.
I have been keeping our chicken in the pen now because they are getting to my Spring plants:(
