• Sunday, November 25, 2007 - Something I am going to try
There is something I have been wanting to try for a long time. We have an outdoor woodburner. There is plenty of ashes, so I am going to try and make soap. Frontier Freedom website had a great article on making your own lye from pot ash. Several years ago, we went to an outdoor reenactment of pioneer days and a lady was making soap from ash. I always wanted to try it. So I am going to. I know it will take me a while. Hopefully I will be able to share some pics.
Update on dd1`s car. She found a hood for it. The cost was 107.00. Cheaper than what I thought it would be. She still needs two turn signal lights. They will cost 32.00 each and one headlight at 95.00. Total for all about 270.00. The hood still has to be painted. Which her dad can sand it down and primer it. I am not sure how much the paint will cost but I am sure it is expensive. Her car is sliver and the hood it purple. We figured a total cost for everything about 1,000.00. Hopefully it won`t be that much.
Dh went hunting today and I haven`t heard anything from him. His dad was going to go with him. Both of them were going to try and get does, so we can have plenty of meat in the freezer. His mom and dad freezer is loaded down with deer meat. So his dad was going to try and help us with getting meat for ours. Today is the last day of gun season. Muzzler loader will come in for a one week and then bow. Hubby doesn`t bow hunt. Dh is also going to go rabbit and squirrel hunting to stock of on meat. We do not have a steer to butcher this year, nor a hog. Next year hopefully we will have a steer. The one little bull calf that was born a couple of weeks ago will be fatten up for that. Well guess that is about all.
Her car sounds like mine, my car is a grayish color with a white hood. I always say I will get it painted buy always find other things to do with the money. Oh well maybe I'll add that to my xmas list, lol.......Kitty
Oh and let me know how that soap try worksout for you.
My grandma always made her own soap using the ashes.
Good luck with that project and let us know how it turns out.
The Fox Fire books are good ones to read for learning the old ways.Have you ever read any of them?
I know that a lot of the old ways were handed down to you from your grandparents.

I have heard of them but I haven`t read them. I saw the set on ebay for 19.95, I have kicked myself even since then for not bidding on them.
