Basic food storage amounts

{ 07:45, Thursday, February 7, 2008 } { Posted in Food storage } { 2 comments } { Link }

I have looked for some time for a guideline of how much food to store for each person in a family.  What I did was take my monthly shopping list and compile a yearly total-It worked out pretty good-it is surprising the amounts of some things we purchase.  I found a guideline on the internet yesterday that I thought I would share with you.  These are per adult averages.

Grains = 400 lbs

Milk and dairy = 75 lbs

Juices and dry beverage mix = 25lbs

Fats and oils = 20 lbs

Canned or dried Meats = 20 lbs

Fruits and Veg. = 90 lbs Dried or 370 Qts canned

Beans = 90 lbs

Sugars = 60 lbs

This does not include misc items such as spices, condiments, or Auxillary foods i.e. Baking powder, mixes, yeast, and salt.

I hope this helped.  Blessings>faithfarm

Good Morning!  Today I will be making a trip into town to do some food storage shopping and purchase feed.  So I thought I would share this wonderful website that my friend found yesterday.  As many of you know who read this blog we built a small house and storage room is always an issue.  This system on the website is a wonderful tool to assist in both food storage and rotation.  I am impressed with the whole concept, and I hope you are too.  Have a wonderfully blessed day! >faithfarm

Food storage shopping list week #1

{ 11:34, Wednesday, January 2, 2008 } { Posted in Food storage } { 5 comments } { Link }

I've had many people tell me that starting a food storage was to costly and they just didn't know where to start.  So I decided to start a weekly food storage shopping list that most anyone can do, at a cost of $10.00 per week.  Now this is going to be pretty basic so it can be changed to meet your families needs and likes.  I will make note of any sale items I purchase to be accurate in pricing.  I shop mainly at lower cost grocery stores and usually purchase off brand items.  I would love for anyone to join me in this shopping adventure and please add any comments you think will help.  Thank you in advance for any input on this topic.  Remember we are starting from scratch-no current food storage.

Week #1 Shopping list:

1lb pinto beans-dried                        .99

5lb long grain enriched rice           2.49

1lb salt                                                 .34

4lbs sugar                                           .99 on sale

5lb flour                                                .99

3lb shortening                                  2.29

2 cans Tuna                                      1.00 or .50 ea.

1 can peas                                           .34

1 can carrots                                      .34

Total cost                                       ---9.77----   Week one

I hope this was helpful.  Blessings>

Food storage tips

{ 08:55, Wednesday, January 2, 2008 } { Posted in Food storage } { 1 comments } { Link }

There are many ways to store food and alot to consider when planing your storage area.  Here is a few tips to help you get started.

Temperature-As a rule the lower the temperature the longer the shelf life.  Your storage area should be kept above freezing and below 72 F.  This would be a good time to consider your current food storage area.  If storing in your house, will it maintain a stable teperature in the event of power outage?  I have found that my cellar stays about 62 F year round.

Humidity-Food storage should have a really low humidity level-around 15%---Not practical in most parts of the world.  So for those of us that live in higher humidity we must package our goods in a way to keep them from retaining moisture.  I Ziplock all my drygoods in bags or vacu-seal individual packages then I place them in a rubbermaid container.  Keep your boxes from touching outer walls as this could cause condensation.

Light-When it comes to food storage sunlight is bad!  Make sure the area you are storing in does not have sunlight directly on the storage containers.  This can cause changes in temperature and and humidity levels in your containers.  It also degrades the foods nutritional content.  So admire your beautiful quarts of beans and peaches-then keep them in the dark!

Storage times of foods requires ones own research-you decide what is best.  My theory is rotate-use and replace.  That away you only have fresh food in your storage.  Another thing that I might mention is only store foods that you are going to use.  How can you rotate your stock if you are stocked up on goods no one wants to eat?  Take for example egg plant---I like egg plant--it grows so very good here-in abundance-unfortunately my family is not as fond of it as I am...so stocking up on that isn't the best plan.  Remember that as a general rule-glass containers keep food longer than metal cans as long as you store properly.  I hope this helped-Blessings to you.
