Dirty boys!

Wheww...Days re-cap and Homestead reading

We definitly are not used to 'hard labor' after such a nice relaxing winter.   We were all so exhausted yesterday evening.  My youngest (4) who thinks he doesn't need to nap asked if he could please sleep in the van for a few minutes on our ride to go get pizza for lunch!!  We were all exhausted by 6pm when we called it a day!!  SO exhausted that we went out to eat!    (our goal since we had to get a new van is no eating out...and we failed miserably yesterday!!)  I need to get better at working outside ALL day and still making meals!!

We did get a lot accomplished dh was able to take care of a few LARGE brush piles he had made earlier in the year.   The boys took their first steps in the creek and LOVED it... that is where they spent most of the day in fact!

Today is to be exactly like yesterday 72' or better so we are planning to spend the entire day outside again today.  Then tomorrow it is to begin to RAIN and then become MUCH colder until Sunday!

I must say I know I posted this last year too, it is so enjoyable to work outside together as a family, we enjoy ourselves very much!  I just love it.  We don't "work" inside together quite as well, and that is mostly my fault I have a tendency to think "I can get it done better and faster myself".   I am getting better at that thinking.  I still rather have everyone to have his/her own jobs and work seprately...however outside we just click...and it is great!

I have been doing a little reading for some encouragement and new ideas...some of my favorite reading in the last week has included:

The Farmers Wife Guide to Growing a Great Garden and Eating From It Too.  BY:Barbara Doyan

The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It.  BY: John Seymour

I really like the Farmers wife and will look to purchase this in the furture.  The John Seymour book, well I've checked this book out NUMEROUS times it is just a bit TOO much for me now....but I love reading it and learning little bits and pieces...so much information!!

What are your favorite homesteading type books??

I have a few: John Seymour's book listed above is awesome, Hobby Farm by Carol Ekarius, Storey's Basic Country Skills, The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery are the books I own and love. There is one I keep checking out from the library and will probably have to get it eventually: Country Life by Paul Heiney.

My very favorite book is Barnyard in your Backyard. It covers all the basic animals and I use it constantly for reference. I will have to look for the ones you suggested from the library. I will have to look on my shelf for other books I have read before and enjoyed.

Thank you for your sweet comment!

Not sure about a favorite hsbook. We have *really* worn-out our Square Foot Gardening and our Storey's Guide to Dairy Goats. We also have the Storey's guide to Raising Horses and will be getting their Poultry book.
We were just talking tonight about getting a subscription to a dairy goat mag and a horse mag. We also have looked at the Hobby Farm mag and the one Melanie mentioned: Barnyard in your Backyard. I just saw that at TSC last week. After designing and building 2 horse stalls and now looking to build an area for poultry, it looked great!
You know, when you are training children in the ways of homesteading, the books just count as curriculum anyway!

I will say I hope to get back to the wonderful weather we had last week - in the 70's... I just had Jocelyn cover my flowers, b/c we are having a freeze advisory. It's 30' right now!!

tale care!
Blessings-
Jacque
