Friday, December 5, 2008empty houseWell my house is empty of guests. The first few hours it felt nice to have everything back to normal, but today it is quiet and empty feeling again (funny to say with 14 kids in the house). Yesterday I had to take Isabel into Fort Worth a doctors appointment. She had to see a Opthamologist to check to see if there has been any damage to her eyes because of the Graves Disease. Praise God there isn't any damage. We were so happy. We shopped a little while in Fort Worth, but I was honestly just too tired after the wonderful week with family in town. It is cold out here. We have been using the wood burner and the fireplace non stop it has been so cold. The only problem is the heat from these two don't let the heat kick on and warm the bedrooms. This isn't a problem during the day, but at night we can't get the heat to kick on until the fireplaces go out. Maybe this is a great back up plan for when the fireplaces go out. So, as long as someone is taking care of the fire the living spaces are nice and warm. One of my daughters got invited to a prom back in Las Vegas at a Christian school by a nice Christian young man in April. We will be driving back there in April so she can go. We don't allow dating or time alone with a boy so this will be a totally chaparoned outing. She is excited to be going. Well, the day is waiting and I have tons to do. Stay warm and make the best of the time you have. Brenda | 0 comments | Link 2008-Dec-5confuzzled......I'm pretty sure that our finance guy thinks that I am an IDIOT!!!!!! I can not keep track of ANYTHING! I had to set up the 529 myself. I"m thinking that he probalby wishes that he'd come to my house and done it for me! It's not hard, but since he helps us I wasn't sure how to set up some features. Then I emailed him about my IRA. I wanted to put money in and remembered getting the info to roll my old one over, but had no idea........he emails back. I saw the MFS papers in the bag (DH jokingly calls that my filing cabinet) hanging on the baker's rack. Oh YEA!ROTFL!!!!!! I told him that DH cleaned out his filing area tho and dumped it in mine so now it takes me longer to sift thru!LOL I'm sure that he's on pins and needles for my next stupid question. HOW DO YOU FORGET SETTING UP AN IRA?!?!?!?!?!? My excuse is my mom......LOL Oh well, at least i don't have to do anything. And now I get to dig out the 529 papers so we can max that out........ And DH asked last night what to do about the life ins that we cashed out. I DON"T KNOW!!!!!!! Well I DO know, but he doesnt' agree so I simply don't say it. I want this house paid off. He wants to buy a new vehicle. I see the wisdom in both. This is a great time to buy a car, but mine runs just fine! However he said something slipped when we were driving it the other day. I"m pretty sure he's prepping me for the inevitable (in his eyes): the van is falling apart and we should sell it while we can still get somthing for it. I'm sure that it has NOTHING to do w/my sister and BIL getting a new vehicle....... | 0 comments | Link 2008-Dec-4sore.......Ok, I managed to get out of bed. It's my upper body that's sore so I must've taken more of hte fall there than I thought. However I managed to mop and work out, which loosen things up. I had to help both boys w/math today, too!LOL I also paid *my* bills and got stamps ordered. Man, I love the post office sometimes....LOL Last week they sent out stamp order forms so I got my Christmas stamps ordered today and should get them tomorrow! All that's left on my list is to shower and compose the Christmas letter!;) Ok, didn't get the letter done today. That's ok, as Clarice would say, "there's always tomorrow". But then it's not really a dream for me!LOL I'll get it done on MOnday. | 0 comments | Link 2008-Dec-4Thursday on the HomesteadAside from fighting colds this week life has been humming along. I managed to get a little baking done yesterday. I went to make Tobin some breakfast and realized I was completely out of bread… I was quite happy to have some sprouted wheat english muffins in my freezer, so he still got his breakfast! I made 6 loaves of my whole wheat bread. I was making some bean soup for dinner and also made a pan of honey wheat dinner rolls to go along with that. Sierra made a batch of peanut butter oatmeal cookies.
At this point only Emily, Sierra and I have the cold and I hope that is the way it stays! We have been taking lots of Nutribiotic, and drinking herb tea. Unfortunately I ran out of Emergen-C packets. I found a place online that sells them for a great price (http://www.luckyvitamin.com/ ). I usually order them from Azure but even with shipping I paid less per box than what I can get them for through Azure. So I ordered 3 boxes and hope they will arrive soon. Tobin has not gotten this cold, which is good.. he is currently working on repairs on one of our rentals during his weekends. We were hoping for some down time this winter.. ~sigh~ but when things like this come up you just have to deal with it. I am praying he does not get sick and can keep up his strength until the project is done.
We still do not have our tree up. We always get live trees and if we get them too early they dry out to fast so we will wait until maybe next Saturday to get it. Because the cold hit us I have yet to get my Christmas decorations out either. I hope to get to that either today or tomorrow. We need this house looking a lot more festive!
About the only thing we are doing regularly is playing Christmas music! I must say my favorite CD for this Christmas is Casting Crowns new Christmas CD. I keep switching between that and a couple of Kenny G holiday CD’s and Kenny Chesney’s Christmas CD (with my all time favorite song.. All I Want For Christmas is a Real Good Tan.. LOL) and others.. I am amazed at how many Christmas CD’s I have collected over the years. Hopefully by the weekend our home will not only sound like the Christmas season but look like it too! The next thing that I MUST finish today and tomorrow is Christmas gifts that I will be sending out in the mail. I don’t have a lot to do on them and I will feel a great sense of accomplishment once they are done and in the mail!
The countdown continues for my son.. less than 2 weeks now until he leaves Iraq. These last few weeks have really been tough for him.. you would think things would lighten up as they prepare to leave.. but he says, nope.. they are working the guys 16 hours a day except on Sunday, they only work 12..
I know he is exhausted both mentally and physically. I am so looking forward to him coming home and getting some relax time with us… and he is too! Well dinner tonight will be leftovers! I have bean soup left from last night and if it is not enough to go around I will add some grilled cheese sandwiches to it. Tobin does not have to work tonight (his usual night to work), instead he is attending a training class at work this morning and will be home to enjoy the evening with us. We have a couple more LOST episodes to watch.. that show is rather addicting! I don’t know what I will do when we watch all the ones that are out on DVD.. I guess just wait patiently for the rest of them to come out! LOL..
That is all the updates from my homestead! I hope you are all enjoying the Christmas season! | 3 comments | Link 2008-Dec-3it finally happened.........GREAT DAY! I worked out, emptied the dishwasher, got the boys ready adn we left. Unfortunately the mom who was to bring snack for MOMS did not show! That meant no bfast for me! We go straight from MOMS to skating so by 12:30 (it's over at 1), I was ready to gnaw my left arm off and could tell my blood sugar was being affected. So I looked down to see if my skate was untied and BAM! Down I went. Hard. My elbow hurts a bit, but I lived!LOL I wonder how badly my knees will hurt tomorrow cuz my elbows took the brunt, but my knees were next. And it knocked the wind out of me!LOL It's my first spill in the 2 years we've been doing this, so not much damage to my pride!ROTFL! From there I picked up the boy Pizza Hut (BookIts) and I went to McDs to get something to eat. Then to library. I sat. That was nice!LOL But the mom who reads to the older ones left cuz one of he dds was throwing up. So I read to them. Then to the grocery. Aldi has BRIE (which I LOVE!) and goat's cheese! 3 kinds and I got the cranberry cinnamon--YUMMY! I also got some belgian butter truffles. OMW! TDF!!!!!!! I got everything done at home and the chili is on. I may eat truffles for dinner instead......LOL | 0 comments | Link Wednesday, December 3, 2008The longing of a sacred place called "HOME"I rarely get the chance to post here anymore but love to visit and read all of my old stomping grounds. I found this poem recently and even placed it in my sidebar at my other blog. I love it and find it very profound and even though the words were written in the 1800's, they still apply to my life today.

| 4 comments | Link Wednesday, December 3, 2008WednesdayLast night we went to our son Chaser's football banquet. He lettered for the first time as a varsity football player at the school we moved to last January after coming to Alabama from Arkansas. This was quite the feat for him as he had never played football, was in a field of 600 trying out for 80 spots and only 35 or so of them lettered. He was very proud and I am glad for him. Our tree is up and I am working on making the most out of the 17 days I will have the children in our home before they go to their other parents for the Christmas break. We will enjoy family nights of Christmas videos, driving to see the city Christmas lights, and a couple of evenings of each of their frends coming over to have a homemade meal together and to allow us to share time with them enjoying Christmas activities together. This turned out to be a huge hit with their friends, though we did simple things, popcorn balls, made ornaments, and had traditional food together. The high schoolers actually asked last night if I could do it again this year.....boys!....I loved that they enjoyed what we did for Thanksgiving week together....I had made a homemade "manly" meal of chicken fried steak, potatoes and gravy and green beans and rolls and then had asked them to help put together some things we were taking elsewhere...they loved helping and eating with us and it was a good thing. Son had been so embarassed for me to ask them to come over, but 5 boys together had fun even with the chore part of it. I am thankful today for a beautiful day outside, the tree lights that glow and the smell of paper whites blooming in the den. God is good.
| 0 comments | Link 2008-Dec-2quiet.........Yes, today was quiet. I didn't feel good so that worked out well.;) I did manage to workout and dust. I even got a shower!LOL But about lunchtime, I started going downhill. NOt sure what it was, but I"m sick of these GI issues. I was pretty sure that vomiting was inevitable,b ut I didn't. Mat made me a grilled cheese and I drank a few ounces of Coke. I felt a bit better (I read a book) and figured that I should sort, wash, peel and dice the potatoes while I had the energy. I tossed in 2 carrots for good measure. I found the last package of green onion cheese and knew that there was a package of cooked bacon in the freezer. So if I could just deal w/the potatoes, I'd be good. It was VERY good soup! DH was completely unenthused about the lack of meat, but he didn't say a word. He knows there is probably a very good reason why we're eating potatoes constantly!LOL I also managed to print off December's calendar--which gives me a sense of knowing. And I entered Mat's school thru 1/7/09. That's a good feeling. And now it's time for The Biggest Loser.;) | 0 comments | Link Tuesday, December 2, 2008Pictures, Pictures and more PicturesNothing special about the pictures...just things around the homestead lately :o) Enjoy! Some of the property over the weekend. This is the back clearing where we want to build. If we don't build here, I want to put our schoolhouse up back here anyway (just to the right of that center pine tree...that's where the trail heads back to the pond. The next is the logging road they used a few years back to get to the neighbors property...and where they come up with the 4-wheelers. The bottom of that range there is the end of our property. Next two are of the pond, coming in from that logging road, through the trees. It's just seasonal and lately, that has meant no real water to speak of. The first year it had maybe 2 foot of water. This year, maybe the same. The 2 years in the middle, it was just about bone dry and useless with the drought. We'd like to dig it out more and shore it up to try to keep water in it. We know there's a decent aquifer running through this part of the mountain, down about 150 here at the house end of the property. Would be nice to have some water for the animals if nothing else. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanksgiving weekend work on the homestead...Finally getting the holes dug out for the posts for the back porch area. Most likely, it will never make it as a porch and will be enclosed for living space...maybe that outdoor kitchen ;o) I tried to get the holes started but it's all clay...and really thick nasty stuff at that. I just can't do it. I'm a wimp. I admit it. So, as Drew was over for dinner, we put him to work with Dewey :o) The goofy pup there is the beagles basset mutt mix we have...brains of a stuffed animal, but lovable. He chases rabbits and such all night. Pinned a coyote down in the timber last year so we could shoot it. He's a good dog...just goofy. Notice Miss Abigail's bare feet...this was the day after Thanksgiving. Sure wouldn't be out running the countryside like that back North this time of year! ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanksgiving fixins' on the homestead...We spent all day Wednesday baking...2 pecan pies, 2 apple, 2 chocolate (that's the empty crust with the tin foil in it) and 2 9x13 pumpkin cobblers. And the yummiest yeast rolls :o) It's a mix we do up and keep in the pantry --delicious. And, yes, I'll add the recipe soon! The full menu ended up looking like this...deep-fried turkey, a huge (h-u-g-e) smoked ham from the butcher (stupid me didn't ask about size, just got the one that looked so good...it didn't fit inside the 18qt Nesco roaster we have...had to sit cockeyed until it cooked down some and slide into the pan the right way!). Dressing, green bean casserole, baked corn, potatoes/gravy, sweet potatoes, then the list of desserts. We made honey nut crunch and ranch/dill crackers for snacking all weekend. This was the first year our eldest wasn't at the table. He rode up with Dewey to pick up Hope's car and drive it back. He wanted it to be their first Thanksgiving, and he was frying his first turkey solo... ![]() ![]() ![]() The 20 quart mixer...yes, that's a make-do kitchen sink set up there. We pulled out the cupboard a while back. I have a very nice, new countertop sitting out in the building, but until I know for sure what we are doing (building or simply remodelling) I don't want to use it yet ;o) And, yes, those are cinder blocks under the mixer -- it sits too low to the floor for comfortable use. I know it looks rather hillbilly-ish, but it works ;o) ![]() ![]() The meat, part 1/Day 1...still partially frozen, even after 2 days of thawing in the cooler bag. Guess that cooler bag works far better than I thought it did! We cut up most of the chunks to more suitable pieces and readied them for the canning jars. ![]() ![]() ![]() | 1 comments | Link 2008-Dec-1Back to the grindstone..........Yup, it's Monday adn we are HOME! I'm glad. I missed my bed. Alot. A really really lot!ROTFL! I managed to wash both boys sheets, my new brown cords (THAT I LOVE!) and the darks before we had to get to town to meet an online friend! I hadn't met her before and what fun! She's such a nice person anyway. ;) I bought something for a friend for Christmas while at Cracker Barrel (where we simply met!;)) and out we went. I don't usually bribe my children, but we were all tired from the long weekend so I told them that I"d get them hot chocolate (Joey) nad pumpkin cappucino (Mat) if they BEHAVED! They were really good!LOL Then to Lowe's to check out a tip on some scrapbooking stuff and then to get some bread and gas. Joey managed to jostle his cup enuf to spill it down the front of his coat, shirt and jeans. I got teh cup cleaned up and realized that I did not see my Cracker Barrel purchase. I decided that I left it there and sent Mat in after it. Thankfully he came out w/it!LOL It's always humbling to do something stupid like leave your purchase at the counter and wonder out of the store!LOL Then back home to finish up laundry and decide that fried potatoes would go well w/bacon and eggs. And a few rounds of Word Twist on Facebook tossed in there..........LOL | 0 comments | Link { Last Page } { Page 1 of 5 } { Next Page } |
