A Sad day....D checked on the goats before he left for work this morning and found the new baby girl dead. so sad! He found her in the barn, which is all open inside, no stalls, just laying there. It could be that one of the big goats layed on her. guess we'll never know. Calen was with D when they found her, but the other kids don't know yet. Since their all awake, finally, I guess I better go tell them. It's so disappointing, as we were going to keep her.
Goat Weigh-In
Mama Angel and her twins first thing this morning....soooo cute!
Calen on the scale with the female. She weighed 3.5 pounds.
This pic is blurry, but you can see her markings.
Calen weighing the male. He was 4 pounds.
A close up of the male.
"MAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! Did you see what they did to me?!?!?!?! MAAAAAAA!!!!" Yesterday, I guessed that they weighed under 5 pounds. Last night, D guessed 2.5 pounds. We were both a pound off, so we were both right! lol Twins!!We were so excited at about 11:45 when Melissa can in the house saying that Angel had twins! D and I were out there just last night talking about how she was getting bigger, but she wasn't bagging up, so we didn't think it was going to be anytime soon. Oh, how goats like to prove you wrong! lol
They are sooooo cute, the black headed ones a girl, and the brown is a boy. One to keep, one to sell. :) They are doing well, and hopefully, we'll get a chance to weight them later. They are so tiny! I'm guessing under 5 pounds each. We'll see if I'm right! lol Goats WormedToday, D wormed all the goats with Ivomec 50ML 1% injectable, given orally at the rate of 1cc per 50 pounds.
Hannah And Yoda
Here's a pic of Hannah petting Yoda's boy the day he was born. This is a good pic for showing the steepness of the hill. The goats, including the little kids, run up and down this hill like it was nothing. For people, it's not so easy. lol A Lady in the Manger
The kids are never satisfied to eat hay from the OUTSIDE of the hay manger. They like to climb in and eat! This is Lady enjoying having the hay to herself. Pepper the cat decided to go visit Lady. Yep, the cat gets along with the goats. Yoda's BoySometime between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. Yoda kidded. She was in labor with 2 little hooves and 1 little nose showing, when we had to leave to take Melissa to work. So we missed the delivery. She had one little boy.
See the black on the tip of his tail? The markings on his face are really pretty.
He has white down the center of his face, with brown stripes on either side. You can only see the brown on one side in this pic, though. Mother and baby are doing well. Who needs to exercise...when you can wrestle a 125 pound goat? Which is what I had to do THREE times today. CeCe kept climbing over the fence to eat, and didn't want to go back in. Guess the grass really is greener on the other side of the fence! She climbed out again after DH got home, so he put her back and put her on a chain. He's going to leave her chained up today, so maybe she'll get message that she has to stay in the pen. Nah, nevermind, she won't. lolYodaWe noticed tonight, that Yoda is bagging up. Yeah! She was the only eligible doe that didn't breed last fall. So it looks like kidding isn't over for us this year, after all. yeah!Goat NamesOk, we finally agreed on names. This is: Emily And this is: Fancy. New Goat UpdateLast night, DH wormed the 2 new does, and moved them into the pen with the others. Of course a LOT of head butting occured. Poor things are at the bottom of the pecking order, and the other does made sure to let them know! They seemed to have settled down this morning. Feeding time will be another story. DH moved Shadow, our Australian Sheperd into the new pen last night, and Billy our buck this morning. Shadow was happy. Billy was not. Guess he liked being in with all the girls. lol Oh, one of the new does has a name, the other does not. We've never gone this long in naming a goat! No one can seem to agree. Guess we're going to have to sit down, have a family meeting, and not get up till we agree! Fencing
We put up more fence today. For now, it will be used to isolate the new goats. After they're free, we will use it as a buck pen. From the bottom of the hill, we have Kenn, 19, Melissa, 18, Zachary, 5, Hannah, 10, Abigail, 7, Calen, 11, and D, age unknown. New GoatsDH went to Tractor Supply last night after work to buy the Ivomec, and found out that they had Boer Cross Nannies. So he came home, wormed the goats, and bribed us with supper out to drive back to Tractor Supply (45 minute drive one way) to see the goats. He ended up buying 2. lol Here they are, in the back of the van. No we didn't put hay down just for them. We haul hay in the back of the van, so it's always there. I call the van the Haymobile! lol
Here they are in the barn.
I was unsure about buying them at TSC. But we agreed to go ahead and get them, and put them into isolation to make sure they're not sick. The look nice and healthy, but we want to make sure they aren't carrying something. We're not sure how old they are, but the one in the front weighs 23 pounds, and the one in the back weighs 22. So far they are unnamed. But I'm sure the kids (2 legged) will take care of that shortly. lol Feeding TimeThe goats lined up eating their grain. We made this feeding trough out of PVC pipe.
While the adults were eating, the some of the little kids were checking out the hay.
Goats WormedToday, we wormed all the goats (not the new kids) with Ivomec 50ML 1% injectable, given orally at the rate of 1cc per 50 pounds. This is the 1st time we've used Ivomec.Kid PicsAngel and her twins born Tuesday, the 7th at 11:45 a.m. and 11:57 a.m.
The girl, named Angel's Lady was the 1st born. Weighing in at 5.5 pounds. We will be keeping her. That's why she gets a name. :) We call her Lady.
And the boy, simply called Angel's Boy so we can keep track of him. He will be sold also. Weighed in at 6.0 pounds.
Twins Again!!!Angel had twins today! A brown headed girl, and a black headed boy! I'll have to post pics later, the camera battery died, and we leave for piano in a little bit. That is, if we can tear ourselves away from the new little ones!Kid UpdateThe 3 baby goats are all doing well. They are so cute, running around and playing. Last year, when we bought Angel and her babies (that's their picture over on the right) the babies were already a couple of months old. So this is our first time with newborns. They are so much fun! The children (get's confusing if I call them kids. lol) love to go out and hold the babies. The Mama goats are okay with this. :) Here are a couple of pics taken this week.
The Boy. The children thought he needed a better name than Boy, so they call him El Nino. lol
Twin One and Twin Two (yep, that's what we call them. lol) snoozing on the logs. All the goats love climbing and playing on these logs. It's really funny to see full size goats playing king of the hill on the logs! lol
Twins!CeCe had twins while we were out this afternoon! We were gone for about an hour and a half, and came home to this!
Twin 1, on the right, weighs 7.5 pounds. Twin 2, on the left, weighs 6.5 pounds. They're both boys!
Melissa carrying twin 1 back to his mother.
Twin 2, the smaller one. Isn't he cute?! Our First Kidding!Deb (the goat) woke Melissa up at about 6:15 this morning yelling. She came and got us, and D went out to find Deb in labor. He ran back in and got us, and the lantern. This was Deb's first kidding, and she was very vocal about it!
Baby Boy was born at 6:50 a.m.
Getting his first bath.
Isn't he cute?!
He's about 3 hours old here, and has figured out where to find his milk at.
Napping under the hay rack.
Mama checking on him.
Abigail on the scale with him, while Melissa and Hannah look on. He weighed 7 pounds! Since he's a little boy, he will be sold. We've told the children not to get attached as he will be sold. But he's sooooooo cute! Since he's the first goat born here, I suspect we'll have a hard time letting him go! |
