Blessings!

Well, it's never dull around here that's for sure:P

Brother Craig got home yesterday for his weekend with us. He had some errands he needed to run so we took off to do that. I had to pick up some more egg cartons anyway as I have lots of folks that want eggs again. We did our errands, got home to have supper. We had fried porkchops, steamed spinach, garlic potato mash, applesauce, bread/butter/jam and milk/water. For dessert we had Dutch Apple Pie a la mode with coffee of course:)

Anyway, it was late, we had all the animals tucked in, everyone had gone to bed and it was just me and my future daughter-in-law having a little nighttime chat. Suddenly we hear one of the ducks start shouting. She's the queen and does that often. Anyway, no sooner did she start than the rest of the ducks started in and then the goats, the horse and the chickens! Not knowing what was happening but assuming it was a cougar (we have trouble with them here every year) and not sure who was being attacked we sailed out the back door armed with the trusty flashlight. Now anyone in their right mind, after hearing their animals going off like a siren, would have grabbed a form of protection like a gun, pistol, skillet:P but nooooooooooooo, I run out in bare feet with my flashlight, waving my hand in the air to set off the outside light which hasn't come on yet. The animals are still going off like crazy.

I slowly approach the duck pen to find one of the ducks stuck through the fence. Everyone stops (dead silence and eerie). She looks dead. I'm thinking, great, we are down another animal. I reach down to try to untangle her from the fence when she starts squawking and scared me half to death. I fall bacward into the wadingpool, and lose the flashlight :P By now I"m ready to choke that duck and whatever made her get stuck!

She's not my duck and she doesn't like anyone to touch her except for Mary-Ann so Matt's sweetheart runs into the house to wake poor Mary-Ann up to come rescue her duck:P Between the two of us we unstick her highness and she walks around rather indignant. Mary-Ann gets ahold of her and we check her over to see if she's injured. Well, well, well, it looks like a coon tried to drag her through the fencing! ugh! Those crafty little beasts!

Although all is well this morning, the coon will be greeted with a not so pleasant consequence if it returns tonight and I'm wondering how to reinforce our pens against it again. The problem isn't in the coon itself. The problem is that ducks and chickens and turkeys tend to crowd agains fences when frightened, the coon simply has to wait it out and when they cram each other up against the fence it just grabs what is closest.

I'm afraid I didn't sleep well as I kept waking up to sounds all night. Nothing unusual, mind you, just sounds:P Perhaps tonight will be uneventful and I be able to finish sleeping:P

I'll be back again tonight, I hope, to post again. Have a very blessed day!

God be with thee!

Sister Lori

My, what a fiasco... I'm sure at the moment, it wasn't funny, but if you were on the outside looking in, it may have given you a chuckle :o)

[hope you get a *good* night's sleep tonight]

~~Believe me, I've learned to laugh at everything...lifes too short to take all these mishaps seriously:) And yes, we've been having a real tickle about it all morning:)
God be with thee!

LOL I have had a few night like that were my hens start yelling. I too run out with nothing but my flash light. My son asks me "Mom, what do plan to do one day when there is actually some wild animal out there?". I don't know maybe frighten it to death when I scream bloody murder. LOL.
Enjoyed the story.

~~I actually DID come face to face with a cougar once:P It had gotten into my chicken coup (An enclosed 6ft, high 12x6' covered dog kennel. How it got in there is anyones guess...I came out in the middle of the night in my sleepshirt and bare feet and a VERY weak flashlight (actually it was a penlight:P). I am so very thankful it decided to scale the grapevines and dash into the woods behind the henhouse. I had been less than 5 feet from it at the time and if it hadn't made that awful gutteral growl I would have kept walking till I walked right into it:s
But that's a long (and later very funny) story:)
Glad you enjoyed it:)
God be with thee!

That’s a hilarious story! I hope you decide to share others (like the one with the cougar) with us. You have a way with words that puts me right there with you.
I haven’t been to your blog until just now. I’m glad I did! I’d like to add you to my friends list if you don’t mind.
