UPDATE on the chicken killer
After losing 12 chickens in a few days time we think the madness has stopped. We borrowed a couple of live traps and set them the night following the last episode. Next morning there was a coon in it. We still can't figure out how he squeezed his body into such a small space but I guess he was determined. Hubby took him way far away and turned him loose in the woods yesterday. Last night he set the traps again and we didn't catch a thing so I think we probably got the guilty critter. We plan to keep setting the traps for a while to be on the safe side plus the spaces are now boarded up and I dare say nothing can get in to hurt the chickens now.

Im glad you caught it before you lost any more birds! I scared off a red tailed hawk who was trying to lift one of my birds off the ground yesterday, that was so scarry we are now covering our coups. I get too attached to my birds I think.

Ugh. Raccoons can be just rotten! During the summer, I awoke to one killing one of my "girls" in the middle of the night. It was awful! I'm so glad you caught him.

I can remember my great grandpa having a horrible time with chickens being killed. He kept saying it couldn't be the racoon he had seen near the coop. When he killed the coon though all the chicken killing stopped. I hope your problems have stopped too!
God bless
