Robin's Nest

• Friday, February 22, 2008 - My homemade skincare regime

For the last year or so I have been avoiding using over-the-counter or spa products on my skin and hair. There are just to many chemicals and " unknown" things in them! After doing alot of surfing the net and reading some books, I have been making and using these things on my skin:

I wash my face with a mix of honey, plain yogurt, ground oats and almonds. I also add a little tea tree oil for it's anti-bacterial properties. I then use as a toner a light mix of apple-cider vinegar and water. I apply a lotion that I make called Light Lotion Potion. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:
30 grams fractionated coconut oil
19 grams shea butter
12 grams sweet almond oil
8 grams jojoba oil
21 grams emulsifying wax
7 grams stearic acid
326 grams  rose hydrosol
100 grams aloe vera gel
15 grams vegetable glycerin

Blending Procedure:

  1. Combine the coconut oil, sweet almond oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, emulsifying wax and stearic acid in a large heat proof (I use Pyrex) glass measuring cup with a pour spout. Place the mixture in a hot water bath until the waxes are completely melted. Remove from heat.

  2. In a separate Pyrex cup, combine the hydrosol, aloe vera and glycerin. Place the mixture in a bath for about 10 minutes to warm, then stir until the glycerin dissolves completely. Remove from heat.

  3. Stir the oils/waxes together to make sure they are evenly combined.

  4. In the separate container, stir the water ingredients to make sure they are evenly combined.

  5. Begin stirring the oil/wax mixture with an electric mixer on medium speed and add the water mixture as you stir. You will see the mixture begin to thicken as you blend it. Continue mixing until until Light Lotion Potion is thick and rich. I have found that blending for anything less than 20 minutes does not allow enough time for this lotion to become stable. Mixing for less time than this could resultin separation of the lotion. Pour into clean bottles. I like to use plastic bottles with flip top lids for easy dispensing.

I got this of a site called: www.makeyourcosmetics.com

I hope you all enjoy my journey through natural skincare!

Blessings, Robin

I'm curious to know what your skin type is on your face? Do you see any difference over the past year?

I have sensitive skin being a little on the dry side but also have a t zone oiliness. Not alot(depends on what I eat) but some. I have been told I have complex skin and I would tend to agree with that. I was using Dermalogica(salon) for a couple of years but just couldn't be okay with what it was costing me and plus all the junk as well. Sooo, I decided to try making my own stuff and will NEVER go back to store-bought. It is a new hobby for me. Plus I feel I am doing good things for our budget and my skin. I definately feel and see a difference. I had someone tell me my skin looked so moist(not wet) but hydrated. For 43 year old skin, I thought hallelujah! You do have to find the combo of things that work for your skin. I tried two other lotions before I found the one I am using now. I also drink kombucha tea which helps with the "glow" of the skin. You should give it a try! Itis not as much work as it might seem. I have a great time!
