Tuesday, February 21, 2006 - You Be the Judge

Posted in Nutrition
Fact: We have been sugar-free for one whole year.
Fact: We have had 2 colds total (for 5 people) so far this winter (last year when we were sugared up our colds numbered as the stars in the sky, the grains of sand by the sea).
Fact: Last week my children had birthday cake with ice cream three times (over two parties; one helping was leftovers).
Fact: One loving, well-meaning, super-duper relative (I love this lady) gave my kids Valentine's Day chocolate candy last week. They each had about one piece a day for 4-5 days.
Fact: Two of my three children are now sick with colds. The third has the beginnings of a sore throat.

Is it just me or is there a connection here? Be the judge for me. Tell me what you think. You know, I hate being the spoil-sport when it comes to my children enjoying sugary goodies, but when I have to suction out my dear 2-year-old daughter's nose, I know that it is just not worth it!  Sign me up for another year of sugar-free.

Refined sugars definitely supress the immune system. The is because the nutrients that help your body to digest it have been removed from the sugar, so your body needs to take from its own supply. Natural Sweeteners should be limited too though.

I have noticed that with myself. I could be fine and then be at a party and drink 2-3 cokes plus eat all sorts of junk and the next day I am wiped out and coming down with a cold.

We too have done the no-sugar thing on and off. It makes a world of difference. The hardest part is not offended relatives. Sometimes they just don't get it. But my kids have learned why they shouldn't have sugar and they tell people that they can't have sugar, articificial flavorings or colorings.

I hope your family feels better soon. I am so inspired by this no sugar thing. Mainly for weight issues. I have struggled with weight most of my adult life and I have a son and daughter who if we dont watch it will as well. I would love to hear more on how everyone is cutting out sugar and how they are substituting it. For instance if you want to make choc. chip cookies, what do you do?

Thanks,
Trixi:)
