Carrots and Copperheads

08:57, 2006-Apr-3 .. 3 comments .. Link

Got half a bed of Nelson carrots planted yesterday and the Lord watered them in this morning around 5:30 when the thunderstorm rolled in. Thankfully we didn't have any violent weather. Still have more radishes to put in, plus two flats of spinach.  If that all happens tomorrow, it will be a more productive day than I have had in a while!

The boys and I also found our first ever copperhead snake today, in the safest way possible, I will hasten to add.  It was lying in the middle of the road, on the yellow lines, with my parent's little creek running in the pipe under the road.  So I guess maybe he was going from one side of the creek to the other, and that warm asphalt was too appealing.

I pulled up alongside him, rolled down the windows so the boys could see him, too, and he looked like he'd just had a meal....meaning he was FAT!  And lazy.  I wasn't sure he was really a copperhead, but just then a truck pulled up behind me. I rolled forward, motioned for the guy driving to take a look, and he yelled to me that it was a copperhead.

Stop reading now if you are easily offended.  I have three small boys and we play outside a lot.  I do not want a poisonous snake around my children.  I am fine with all other kinds of snakes but I do not want a known copperhead playing in the same creek as my children.

As it turned out, I didn't have to "take care" of the problem myself.  The guy in the white Ford 150 did it for me.  He had a young boy in his cab.  He and I think alike.

Whew!  What an adventureous day for a homeschool family who is allegedly taking the week off from school.......

Snakes

It must have been a day for snakes because we saw one yesterday too at our neighbor's driveway.

I don't like snakes one bit and poisonous snakes just scare me to death.

Blessings,
Laura

Hey there! I just wanted to post that as "prolife" as I am, I totally agree with killing the poisonous snake! I wouldn't want one playing where my kids did either! Glad the guy in the pick-up truck took care of it! Copperheads and cottonmouths scare me...

The rain storm monday morning sure was loud, don't recall a storm being that noisy lately. Woke everyone up in our house. The rain is excellent for the plants tho!

Amen! Amen! - no such thing as a good "venomous" snake - unless of course your eating one......I'll have to catch up on all my posts of rattlesnakes from last year.......I still haven't brought all of them over here - our cats have been bringing home Queen snakes of all sizes which means - all the snakes are waking up with the renewal of Spring........we have a "wild chicken" that for whatever reason did not bond with the flock - she roosts in the woods and lays her eggs under the chicken house - which means we will be battling the rat snakes big time this year!! - another long story for another day!!

So far, (knock on my wooden head), we've not had any copperhead sightings - that's not to say they're not around - moccasins, too - especially now that our pond is filling up - but the rattlers - well - they and I go to war - it's time to put out the sulfur and mothballs!!

I've already begun my warm weather rant: "Watch where you're stepping" "don't go to the creek w/out your boots on!!!".........

ah, yi, yi!!

what'a mother to do ~

;-)
Harriette

p.s. Thanks for your earlier comment - "blushing"!!
