Sound like a good mix. My reds are the best layers. Be careful with all of those roosters though, they normally don't get along with each other very well.

We to have start our adventure with chicks, hens and rooster. I hope this doesn`t sound stupid but are you going to keep all those in your house or do you have some place out side to keep them until the are old enough. I guess what I am asking with chicks that young will it be warm enough to be outside by then. I am just learning about chick. We have a hen with 6 chicks about 9 days old now and dh say it will be okay to set them outside during the day if warm and sunny right now, but I am afraid to. Although it hasn`t been warm and sunny today. I wish you good luck starting off with that many. So much braver than I. sheryl

Recap for Questions

Sheryl: Yes, we plan to start them in the basement next to the sliding glass door. We are either building or borrowing a homemade plywood enclosure from a friend who already has a three week head start on us with his chicks. If his aren't ready to leave it, then we'll build one of our own.

Joyful H'maker: I realize the potential for trouble with the roosters! I got two of each thinking I'd have a back up if one didn't make it. Then, if all of them happen to live, then I was thinking the "extras" would be our first, ahem, butchering experience. We'll see if I have the stomach for that! I'd really like to be able to have some fertile eggs for my boys to follow all the way through to hatching. There's a preteen down the road from us who has all the equpment and that's my intent. Again, that experiment might have to wait.

I'm always overshooting what I can actually pull off, so this is no different!

that is exciting! we've been hatching our own chickies this year in an incubator, and that has been *very* fun.

How fun! Who did you buy them from?

We bought from the Murray McMurray Hatchery. Maybe when get our "chicken legs" under us and gain some experience, I'll branch out to some of the specialty hatcheries. Maybe. I hear great things about McMurray.

One more thing

Farmgal/Sheryl: I heard this week that baby chicks can't fully control their own body temp until the feathers come in and the fuzz is gone. So if I were you, I'd wait for a couple more weeks to set those new babies outside. Unless you live in FL or somewhere tropical......

The reason I asked is because I was imagining on all those little chick and what fun you will have cleaning up after them. But ours is in a cage in my bathroom and they smell and are messy. You are lucky to have a basement and using a plywood box. All I can say for us, it has been an adventure with the chicks but I have enjoyed them so much. I can`t wait to hear more about your adventure with your little chicks. Sheryl
