Jane, having lived in the country for 14 years before we moved to town, I am familiar with ways to get rid of mice. Fortunately we didn't have rats, but I'm sure you should do the same types of things. Spring-loaded traps work well. We put peanutbutter on ours. You have to check them daily and dispose of the bodies, but they work well. Of course, you'll have to put them where kids and kitties can't get them. If you have openings around pipes or that type of thing, you can stuff coarse steel wool around those openings. You would be amazed at what small openings the mice can get through. Some people use what is called "Bar Bait" outdoors or De-con and of course, once again, it has to be where kids and pets can't get to it. I don't like to use the last two products inside because the mice will eat the toxins and die in places where you can't find them (but you will be able to smell their decomposing bodies). You'll need to be very careful about food storage in your house if they are getting in. Glass jars with lids are good and so is Tupperware and Rubbermaid. The nasty little things will chew right through cardboard and plastic wrap or bags and even aluminum foil. A Rubbermaid garbage can works well for dog food or grains you might store in an outbuilding. Let us know what types of things work best for you!............Denise (prairiemom)
