Blog world vs reality....

Hmmm..... is there a difference in who we are on our blogs vs in real life?  As I have been contemplating (see earlier post) this whole blog thing and why it is sooooo popular I have come up with many conclusions.  (which of course may or may not be correct! LOL)  One thing I have decided is that we all CRAVE attention and compliments.  In the blog world we can let the world see only what we want them to see!  We can post all kinds of cool things, pictures and posts about things we have, done, made, places we have been, etc.  We can look awesome on our blog!  We don't have to let people see any of the dust, dirty laundry or bad attitudes.  We feel great when we get sweet comments, we feel nice when we post sweet comments.

People can "drop by" whenever they want to without interfering with our "real life".  In fact in our blog life we want people to "drop by for a visit", we count them with hit counters!  Aren't we totally cool when we get a ton of hits?   How would we really feel if people were really coming over for a face to face visit?  Would suddenly the "realness" of life take over?  Would the dirty dishes, toys out, our important schedule, our physical appearance, our attitudes and all the mess of our real life make an actual real relationship difficult?  The blog world lets us have the best of both worlds.... we are personally in control of EVERYTHING and we can just live out the life we want others to see.  We can receive positive support, we can become popular by counting the number of our hits and we can be a good blog friend by posting nice comments.

Please don't get me wrong, I enjoy blogging.  However, what are our true motives?  I believe we all crave friendship and positive comments because God created us with a need for fellowship.  However, I think that it is possible to become content with blog friendships because they are "easier" than real, in the flesh kinds of friends.... after all you don't have to have a clean house to feel good about a blog friend dropping by.... my site is ALWAYS dust free!!!!!  We can interact with our blog friends at our total convenience.... not much personal sacrifice ever required.... a real life friend might need us at an inconvenient time...  A time I had other things planned or am tired!!!!  So, am I feeding my selfish tendencies with my blog????  Is this just another way I try to exercise control?  I have to really ask myself, how would I feel if someone real, in the flesh "dropped by" at this moment?  Well, they would see laundry that needs folded, toys out, dishwasher that needs emptied and DUST!  Would I give the friend a warm welcome or would I simply be focused on my feelings about my messy house?  Oh, why couldn't they have just emailed me??  Couldn't they have just posted on my blog?   hmmm.... just some thoughts I am pondering!

A Difference

I would say yes, not so much here at HomesteaderBlogger's, but on the over-all internet.
People tend to be more bold and brazen when you will never meet the person you are talking to.

Don't believe me? Just look at some of the comments left on any youTUBE viedo, those people are heartless!!!

We are lucky here (as a web site), most of us treat everyone with respect and kindness. Perhaps we are the exception to the rule. LOL

What a great insightful post! I agree -- blogging should not replace our need for real life friends....... computer friends and email friends are wonderful but they do not replace the need we all have for fellowship with others........ I try to remind myself that all the time...... a good test is to see if you can go without blogging or email for a few weeks......if it is easy to do -- then you know that it's not taking over one's life......but if someone can't seem to disconnect from the computer world then there may be a problem to consider.........

This community is wonderful & exceptional ~ very encouraging and wonderful. I have tried blogging elsewhere - just too crazy out there....... I am grateful that we have such a loving and supporting community .

Blessings,
gloria

ps. not sure why there would be a need to have a counter on one's blog? I have seen these and I don't understand "why"? I think that is kind of silly to care how many folks come to the blog...... I am writing in my blog not to impress folks but to share with friends and family who don't live close by and it's a great way for me to journal and get rid of stress!! :)

I think about those things too

I believe in this "computer age" that we need to be very careful not to let "online" become our reality. We should always be striving to keep connected with others in IRL, and to be out and involved in our communities, etc. I also don't want my kids having their memories of me being ones of me sitting at the computer! I have resisted getting involved at all in blogging for a long time, and now wonder "why did I start?" LOL! I came across this site, and it looked more up my alley. I will admit that I love to share pics of my blessings, my family and my life...I'm not much into sharing personal viewpoints etc. online, though, or reading about others views, but I do love people, pictures, homestead type living, and gleaning good ideas, etc.. There are very few blogs that even catch my attention. I like pics and family life type stuff:-) It is good to keep our motives in check, and your post is a worthy one! I think your hunting pic, chicken story, and and your mention of the park you went to is what got my attention. I have a link to the park in my favorites and hope we can visit..it sounds great! That barn dance sounds fun! So... there are worthwhile things to be found in blogs;-)

Great thoughts to ponder!! I loved reading your thoughts. I know for myself I have to always check my motives in whatever I do and make sure they glorify the Father. Here are some of my thoughts on why I blog:

We have moved almost 20 times in the last 17 years. Many friendships are able to keep cultivated by having our blogs to peek in and see how one another are doing, even if we are 3000 miles away.

Having visitors post on my blog is kinda like having someone drop in for a visit and I always love when someone drops in, especially since I live WAY OFF the beaten path and for someone to drop in means they really wanted to visit with me.. what a treat those times are!

Transparency..this is something I hit on very little when I posted "Playing Church of Being the Church? That is the question" We all must guard our hearts from keeping "face" or being afraid to share with others our hurt and need for prayer.

Counters? I haven't seen these I dont' think... maybe I just haven't paid attention. However, I did see one the other day that tells you how many people are looking at the page your on the same time as you. Now, that I found fun!!! It felt like I was part of a community... is that funny or weird? I know the verdict is still out on that one! LOL

I agree with you 100% that blog friendships should not replace "real life" fellowship!!

Thanks again for the post!

Oh, and just for the record..... when you drop by my blog for a visit picture me in my pj's because I normally post at night time and that is truly my attire! SMILE!
