If you have a daughter.....

read this USA today article.  Wannarexia...... wanting to have anorexia..... is becoming a common issue!  I have really tried hard to never present a view of negative body image with my children.  However, they hear it everywhere... even at the tender age of 8 my daughter has asked me if she is *FAT*!!!!  I have done the best I know how to let her know that her body is beautiful and that God did a great job when he created her.  Is she overweight?  Not at all!!

This concerns me that at her age she is already starting to wonder about whether her body is "good enough"!  She hasn't become consumed with this question and hasn't said anything about it since.... I just pray for her.  I also make sure I NEVER say anything about my own challenges/frustrations with my own body.    I know first hand what it is like to go to the extreme of being thin.  I weighed an entire of 105 pounds (at 5' 9") my sophomore year of high school.  It got me a lot of attention.  It was something that I could control.... I could exercise all I wanted and I could eat or not eat anything I wanted.  Fortunetly, God has healed me of these challenges.  I may not be 100% happy with my body, but I do not want to present a negative body image....  I don't want to have a negative body image.  My body is a masterpiece  created by God.... God has used it to perform miracles.... bringing FOUR new lives into this world.  My body has done exactly what God created it to be/do!  Does it look like a movie star?  NO!  Should it?  NO!!!  (I am reminding myself these things on a daily basis)

Anyway, just thought that if we are facing these questions and challenges in our home then there are probably others out there facing them, too.

They are 'starved' for attention. All of the movie stars who have anorexia get their pictures on the front page of the magazines. They get their faces all over TV. Everyone talks about them.....their glamour and their fame........and the attention is on them. When moms, grandma's, babysitters, older sisters idolize, worship, watch, speak about these people.....younger ones are trained to do the same. They have no real life role models. All they have is 'tv land, music land, tabloid land, gossip land' types to look up too. Sad.

The only way to avoid this worship of the body is turn off the tv, and throw away 90% of all magazines and newspapers that come into the house.

Cartoons, commercials, sitcoms, and the like are FILLED with hidden 'body image' messages.TONS and TONS of hidden, subliminal messages.

Then you get out on the playground at school, or at the local park, or wherever 'girls congregate' and you will hear it being talked about. By the moms who sit and jabber (all within ear shot of the kids) and the girls on the playground.

Something I am training my children is to be comfortable in their own skin. The "world" is out to get them to think otherwise, so they need to be sure and confident who they are In Christ.
