A Tip for Making Christmas Lists with Littles
Do your children make up a Christmas list every year of all their wishes? Mine always have & still do today although they are 15 & 11. I remember when my 11 yr. old (soon to be 12 in Jan.) was really little, about 3 or 4 & couldn't make a list all by herself b/c she couldn't spell. It was frustrating for her b/c her older sister could write down all sorts of things that she wanted. So I came up with an idea for the youngest one so that she could make a list of her very own. When the sales ads would arrive on Thanksgiving Day they would both sit down to make out their list. My oldest would write all hers down & I would have my youngest cut all the things that she wanted for Christmas out with some scissors & then glue them with a glue stick to a piece of paper. It made her feel "Big" b/c she could make up her own list without anyone's help. As they grew older they still would do that every now & then. (shaking my head) KIDS!
Good Morning ! Plans, ideas, thoughts.A good cold winter morning to you all! I am tired this morning as the dogs asked 4 times to go out last night. They are restless due to the fact they haven't gotten their daily walks in order to keep from scaring the deer. Dh has not gotten one . I hope for a buck next week. I am ready to give up on selling Avon. I have only tried for a month but exhausted all of my contacts with no interest to speak of and my heart just isn't in it. I will be sending my manger an email telling her. Which God has directed my heart back to my original ideas. My ideas to provide something for our family and help supplement dh income. I want to be like the Proverbs 31 women who does things to bring in income yet doesn't scarifice her family. The running ideas God seems to have put in my head are still nudging me , more so now after my trying Avon. They are: 1st : Growing and selling produce off the farm ( which will take alot of effort on my part as I haven't even got the garden large enough yet to produce all I want to for our family) 2nd: Selling goat milk soap after kidding season this year ( my first herd, my first kiddings, my first everything with the goats) 3rd: Making homemade aprons and selling ( I may be wrong but in there seems to be more people who want to go back to doing things more old fashioned and I think that maybe I can sell some nice aprons) 4th: Learning to knit and selling hats, scarfs, potholders, mittens, wash rags 5th: A little late for this year but making personalized stockings for Christmas. None money earning things I have done already that save us money ( I think ) Raising chiskens for meat and eggs ( sell some eggs during peak egg season to offset feed cost) Next year will raise some turkeys for us and maybe a few to sell. Deer hunting for meat. Buying what I didn't grow at the Amish farm stand and canning or freezing it. Shopping at the thrift store for clothing. Asking relatives for winter items , snow suits, boots, etc, for Christmas for the children. Does anyone else have some inventive ideas to save or earn money? God always either has my ideas work right from the start or not all from the start. I have learned to go with it or back right off. So I must go with the fore mentioned ideas. Enjoy the day that God hath made , rejoice and be glad in it!

fired / eliminated / displaced from his job, I am seeking advice. I don't know what to do? Obviously stop spending cash. But I just found out that if I do not keep Insurance, that when he DOES get a job, and they find out there was a lapse, they do not cover pre exsisting ailments for one year!!! Things like this. If you have ANY advice, I am willing to listen. Thank you... Ladies from Home School Fellowship!Welcome!
I had recently opened an account on home school fellowship for the sole purpose of contacting Shauna. I logged in, went straight to Shauna's PM and left her my email address, my log in name, and I think my password, in case she wanted to remove it. I was totally upfront and honest about what I was seeking. The only email address I have of Shauna's is no longer working, and I have lost her cell number. I sent her a PM through this board, but she has not been on in ages, so I don't know if she still gets alerts that she has messages. I apologize for stirring up the dust. I thought maybe Shauna could share some of her insights into a situation I am in that she is familuar with. I can see that I should not have disturbed her. Please forgive me. The Pig Farmers of Pure Water Hollow
Posted by Purewater
What an exciting evening we have had here at Pure Water Hollow Homestead! We have once again witnessed the miracle of birth and we are thanking God for all He has done! Our two sows gave birth this evening, and little piglets were popping out simultaneously toward the end of the birthing.6:49 PM, Thursday, December 4, 2008 .. Posted in C) Learning About Pigs .. 2 comments .. Link I think you can now officially call us "pig farmers"! This is the 4th set of piglets we've had from our two sows and this time it all went by the book. We noticed that our boar Rufus was trying to breed our sows, Nellie and Sally, about 3 months, 3 weeks, and 2 days ago. (The books say a pig's gestation time is 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days.) I had projected a due date of December 5th back in September, so on Wednesday, December 3rd, we led Sally and Nellie down from the pig lot to the barn to get ready for giving birth. They are each 2 years and 3 months old now, and they have become old hands at giving birth. We put several bales of straw in their stalls and made them comfortable. I am so glad we moved them when we did, because the piglets came a day early (which was within the margin of error). When they gave birth in July, they surprised us and caught us off guard. We lost several of the piglets in those litters, partly because of poor planning, I think. But this time it felt like we knew what we were doing; I felt like a professional pig farmer! In Sally’s stall Christina exclaimed, "Here comes one!" I looked over at Sally and Christina for just a moment and then trained my flashlight back on Nellie. I couldn’t believe that the beam revealed another piglet for Nellie! It must have come out just a second or two after Sally’s. This scene was repeated again about 5 minutes later. Christina delivered another piglet of Sally’s and I took a picture and then looked back at Nellie. This time my flashlight found two brand new piglets still attached by the umbilical cords to Nellie! They must have come, back to back, at nearly the same time Sally had pushed hers out! All together, I witnessed Nellie giving birth to the last 6 of hers and the last 5 of Sally’s. I got home at about 4:30 and the last piglet was born at about 7:00. When Matthew had gone to check on the pigs earlier this afternoon at about 2:00, Nellie had already given birth to two piglets with one of them still attached by the cord. He flew down to the house on his 4-wheeler to let everyone else in on the news and then raced back up the hollow. Erica, Christina, Simon and Lisa with Timothy in her arms, arrived at the barn shortly thereafter. They were on hand to see Nellie deliver her next several and Sally’s first 9. Sometime around 4:00 Timothy declared he had had enough of standing around in a cold barn, so Erica and Simon took their screaming brother back to the house. Lisa stayed a couple of more hours and Christina did not leave until it was clear that all the piglets were born and safe. Christina actually delivered all but one of Sally’s piglets. As each one came out, Christina made sure their airways were clear and she wiped them off and made sure they found a teat to nurse on. So, after 5 hours of birthing, Nellie had 13 adorable piglets nursing and Sally had 14 beautiful, healthy little piglets nursing. Matthew and I did not leave until 9:30 because it was important to winterize the barn as much as possible. We stapled up feed sacks over all the cracks in the wallboards and over all the windows. By the time we were leaving, ice had formed on the metal gates in the barnyard, the mud in the road had become a frozen crunch, and a heavy frost was covering the hillsides. The low tonight is forecasted to be 18 degrees and the high tomorrow just above freezing. Tomorrow night the weather man says will also be 18 degrees and the 10 day forecast shows below freezing lows for the next 10 nights! The first week of life for these piglets will be a very cold one! Their first four nights are predicted to be 18, 18, 21, and 15 degrees with the highs only in the 30s! This is the most piglets we have had to date, and if they all survive it will mean a substantial amount of possible cash. If we can sell 25 of the piglets in January for the going price of $40 each, it would mean $1000 in our pocket in just 5 or 6 weeks! If we sell them at a bargain basement price of $25 each, it would still be $625. And that would still leave 2 of them for us to raise as market hogs which we would either put in the freezer or sell for around $100 each live, or have processed and sell the packaged pork for a substantial profit. I really can't believe we have 27 piglets! From what I've read, Hampshire pigs usually do not have litters this large. Praise be to God from whom all blessings flow! I did take pictures and I will try to add them to this post someday soon.
a different christmas poemA Different Christmas Poem
The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream. The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight. A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old, Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold. Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled, Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child. 'What are you doing?' I asked without fear, 'Come in this moment, it's freezing out here! Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!' For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts.. To the window that danced with a warm fire's light Then he sighed and he said 'Its really all right, I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night.' 'It's my duty to stand at the front of the line, That separates you from the darkest of times. No one had to ask or beg or implore me, I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me. My Gramps died at 'Pearl on a day in December,' Then he sighed, 'That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers.' My dad stood his watch in the jungles of 'Nam', And now it is my turn and so, here I am. I've not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile. Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red, white, and blue.. an American flag. I can live through the cold and the being alone, Away from my family, my house and my home. I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing another, Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.. Who stand at the front against any and all, To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.' ' So go back inside,' he said, 'harbor no fright, Your family is waiting and I'll be all right.' 'But isn't there something I can do, at the least, 'Give you money,' I asked, 'or prepare you a feast? It seems all too little for all that you've done, For being away from your wife and your son.' Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, 'Just tell us you love us, and never forget. To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone, To stand your own watch, no matter how long. For when we come home, either standing or dead, To know you remember we fought and we bled. Is payment enough, and with that we will trust, That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.' ------------- Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Atlantic BeachWhen Vanessa came out to visit, we went to Atlantic Beach. It's a beautiful white sand beach on one of the Barrier Islands here in NC. The water was quite warm despite it being mid October and we had so much fun swimming and riding the waves back to shore.![]() ![]() ![]()
SurgeryHow things work out some times is such a pain in the tush! On Monday I got in the mail the ok from our insurance company to have more surgery on my still broken leg , I was so happy. The key word is WAS. Why was? Well...... last night Shannon brought home the paper work for the up coming year on our medical insurance. Guess what ? They changed insurance companies. UUGGHHH. I am glad we went back to our old insurance company, but did it have to start on 12-01-08??? Now we have to start all over with getting the insurance to approve for my new surgery. I want this over and done with. My leg has been broken for a year on the 27th of December. God Bless, mj Cute saying from my grand-babiesWe went to Disneyland on the 2nd with the grand-babies. We had so much fun with them. We took them to carry on the annual tradition we have of going to see Santa. We have done this with our girls and Marty. It is the 1st time in 12 years that Marty is not in the picture. That was very hard on us all, we miss him so much. So on the way home I ask Shayna if Jeffie is in a pull up or panties?? Jeffie told me he is" wearing underwear and he is keeping them safe in his pants" While we were taking pictures of things Shayna is taking pictures of her purse who is a stuffed lion (don't ask) . Maddie said " no pictures of the bear take pictures of MEEE". They are so cute. What a blessing they are to us. I will post pictures of Disneyland with the grand-babies soon. God Bless, mj Puppy tales!Well, it has been a bit since I have talked about Sammie (the Goldendoodle). Not that there hasn't been stories to share, but I am sure you all are probably tired of them a bit! But, I just can't help but share a few more stories! 1. Sammie has decided to "undecorate" the bows from the tree. TOP OF TREE:
BOTTOM OF TREE WITH BOWS ON THE FLOOR:
2. I am baking today. I have made a batch of Peanut Butter cookies that are chilling in the fridge, made fudge and made 4 mini banana bread loaves. While the bread was cooling, and I decided to sit down and look at the mail that just came, I realized that I had a BIG puppy that snuck into the kitchen (he knows he isn't supposed to be in there). I went in to see what he was doing just as he nabbed a loaf of bread in his mouth and ran. 3. Shane and I were holding hands the other day. Sammie was sitting on my lap...yes, my 70 lb big boy thinks he is a lap dog. After about a minute, he stretched out his paw and placed it on our hands and left it there. Another time, when we were hugging, he gently jumped up and placed each front paw on each of our shoulders. He just wants to be part of everything! Oh...his mommy just loves him! MY LAP DOG:
4. He loves to tease Holly by getting a ball and playing keep away! He will run right by her as fast as he can. What he has to remember is that she has a quick "bite." Those are just a few puppy tales to share with you!
