Chipster...

Posted in Goats

Got a note the other day,
when I was done unloading hay.
Microchips are now the way,
They need to chip despite my say
They'll chip my horse, they'll chip my goat
Chip each and every little shoat
Chips in my cow and in my chicks
To track them if and when they're sick
Chip the pony, chip the pig
Chip the livestock small and big
Put a chip in chicks and ducks
So "they" can track when they're in trucks.
Chip the turkey, chip the emu,
chip the ram and chip the ewe,
Put a chip into the rooster
Put a chip into the goose-ter
Don't miss the sheep along the way
So they can track them when they stray
Chip them if they bleat or neigh,
if they moo, cheep, squeal or bray
And when they're done with fish and fowl
Pigs and sheep and goats and cow,
Chip the cats and dogs they say
Bunnies, hamsters, gerbils, Yeah!
Chip no matter what you say,
so they can track them night and day
And when they're done, nothing else to do
They'll mandate to CHIP YOU TOO!

Say NO! to NAIS

Surviving Needles...

Posted in Goats
I was successful at my second try giving my goat her shot the other day. As a matter of fact, I have continued to do it twice a day ever since! Except yesterday, it was pouring down rain and my sweetheart went out and gave the evening shot.

It's still not fun- but I have to do it. My husband said if I can keep it up he will get me a Starbuck's Card. He knows my weaknesses. Coffee is one, and the other is his big muscles. I love both of those things!

I still have to irrigate that wound too- but it's gotten even better...it keeps forming a scab, and since there are two holes and the inner one needs to close first, I have to keep pulling the outer scab off and pushing the syringe inside (ICK) to the inner hole. (BARF) The whole thing is pretty gross, and it's freezingly bitter cold outside. I am whining I know, but good grief! I can't wait until that goat is healed!

Giving Shots...

Posted in Goats
is not my forte!
I hate this part of ranching. I had to irrigate a nasty wound, insert tubes of meds, and also clean a teat and insert mastitis meds into that, but I still can't give shots! I tried 4 times this morning, got frustrated, lost my courage, and quit. These are the kind of days when I want to get rid of the critters and have my nails done and go to out to lunch and shopping with other women.
Ugh.
Guess I'll have to go right back out and try.

Goats are not easy to raise - whoever told me that was a blatant liar.

Okay- now I feel better. I'll go back to the barn and try again. If I don't get it this time the goat will have to perish.

More Goat Kids!

Posted in Goats
We got some more Nubian kids yesterday. Both bucks, and that was disappointing, except they are so nice!

Here's one boy, just an hour old, and still wet.

I have little boys coming out of my ears now!

They are all so nice too! I have two worthy of showing, with great bloodlines and long ears, general all around good looks. The others are pretty nice too! This has been a fun year for the kids. Only two girls (I'm keeping both) but the money we put into breeding last year was worth it. The kids this year are beautiful!

BARN BABIES!!!!

Posted in Goats
I've got babies!
My favorite Nubian Doe gave me a beautiful little doeling, and a strapping buckling. Both are long eared and gorgeous!

Here's the buckling, at a little over an hour old, tummy full of colostrum, and already lookin' for mischief!
