Our Family Nursery

Strawberries, Strawberries, Strawberries

For 3 weeks out of the month of June, we saw strawberries in our dreams and everytime we closed out eyes. We have a strawberry patch 45 x 13 feet. It produced better this year than it ever has.

We made 50 pints of strawberry jam and froze 14 pounds of strawberries whole. The kids were SO tired of picking. I kept telling them they would be glad this winter but they were very skeptical.

Now the black raspberries are coming on but we don’t have nearly so many of them. We made two raspberry custard pies and one old fashioned black raspberry pie. They are ready to pick again so I suppose that is what will start our July 4th morning.

Happy Independence Day to you all.

Hoop house

My husband and 19 yods went to Menards and came home with PVC, plastic, and etc. to make a hoop house. They assembled most of it the next day and now it has snowed and been blustery and cold ever since. We walk out and look at it and dream!

When our five year old watched them, she came running to the house telling me that daddy was building a flower house with a chair in it! I didn't know why at the time but you see where she got that from.

You can see the remains of one of our vegetable gardens behind it.

Bottom Heat

I have been researching bottom heat for starting seeds and so I looked up the rubber pads that they sell for this. Wowie, they are expensive. Could I use a heating pad?  I think they are hotter than the bottom heat pad. Does anyone have any experience with this or know anyone who does?
I found a fabulous site for info on starting seeds and lot of other info. Here is the link to it: http://www.reneesgarden.com/ . She has heirloom seeds and tons of articles. I am enjoying reading it all.

So do any of you have tips on starting seeds indoors? I'd love to hear them.

Landscaping Plants

What shrubs and/or perennials do you all have in your landscape? If you could have whatever you wanted, what would you want? We are researching what plants to start for our nursery and thought maybe you all could help. We want to grow things that are popular and people will buy.

How important is landscaping to you?

Our son is looking to go into that field. He has been working for a landscaper in high school and has worked full time for 2 years plus taken classes at the community school in horticulture.

I am thinking about this stuff so much, I dreamed that when I walked outside, someone was outside changing our landscaping and didn't consult me and wouldn't stop. It was a real nightmare because I couldn't find my husband to make them stop. My 16 yodd told me I better learn to handle that kind of stuff myself!

Starting Plants

We have started a growing bed in our basement. We have cuttings from our shrubs and are propogating them under grow lights. We have to mist them every hour all day so it is like baby sitting. We lost a few last week when everyone "forgot". Daddy wasn't very happy when he got home but it has made us a lot more conscientious.

I am hoping to take a picture of our propogating table and put it on here but life is happening and I always forget to take the camera with me.

We are making another table to start vegetable seeds. About mid March is a good time here. I am looking for something for bottom heat, til they germinate. Anyone have any ideas? Heating pads are too hot. What do you think about those pads for heating a pet bed? I've never really looked at one but have heard of them. Let me know if you have a good idea.

Another Blog

Who would have thought I would start another blog. This one will be telling the story of starting our Family Nursery Business. We started getting plants last fall. We are developing our plan and hope to be ready to start in a few months. My husband and I love gardening, it is relaxing to us and we hope to make this something our family can succeed at together. We have three acres and an old hog shed to make into a greenhouse.
I hope to keep up on this blog, as I have not done very well on other ones
.
