Thanksgiving and Black-eye Friday

Posted by Jeanette on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 12:13 in Homestead life

We had a great trip to Arkansas to Sunshine and dads house. All the food and goodies have about caught up with us though and now it is back to healthier eating and some sense of sanity. We enjoyed lots of visiting and even snuck in an adventure at 4:30 a.m. to Black Friday sales at Wal-mart ( I have come to the conclusion that the meaning of Black Friday is a misnomer as I believe it is because you are at risk of a black eye at every corner!) I did get what I went after, one of them being this great bed set (the lighter color in the center was light shining through the window)

I have some cute photo's of the kids as Pianomanjess and Grand-doll Mom were there with the kiddos too. Little Miss and Grand-doll had adorable matching dresses:

Now stick out your tongues and say "AHHHH"....

And The Little had his suit on as well...

And about 2 seconds later he started protesting this fact!

We got a lovely blanket of snow on the ground on the day we were coming home and it continued about half the drive home too.

Police Son flew out to San Diego to celebrate his recent passing of EVOC and his final approaching cleet test. Well, okayyy, he is not in SD celebrating that fact, he is really just partying it up with California Krista in the dessert somewhere, eating deep fried turkey and dreaming of the day they can be together in the same state for longer than a week.

Ahhh, the harsh realities of distant love...

Last night we all had fun setting off Little Miss rocket. It was one we constructed from paper and a film canister for her overdue science experiment. It went off just fine and we had fun re-setting it off several times til we had the amounts just right for a good lift off. I went to take Little Misses picture with her rocket this morning but it was missing and we can assume the Big Marshmallow must have absconded with it. That darn Marshmallow... at present she is "guarding" a dead deer carcass (don't ya just love some of those deer hunters) Ughhh.

On a happier note, well happier for Little Miss, Frontier Man is still working away at her tree house. She has great plans for it, all said with two words "Girls Only".

Here is the progress made so far:

Hey Frontier Man, watch yer head there, I would hate for you to get your head bonked ... and you fall to the ground...   and might need some mouth to mouth resuscitation... and...

sorry bout that, I was jes gettin carried away with myself...

Now where was I at? Oh yeah, Christmas is bearing down on us and as time would have it I am taking steps to get my craft projects all lined up. Here is one of the stockings I am working on ( in the cut-out phase) in a winter horse theme.

AHHHHHH.... it is the soap...soap...soap....

MONSTER?

Lastly, but not leastly, the lovely young Grand-doll Mom had a birthday this week and so I want to wish her a happy birthday, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETIE!!!

The longing of a sacred place called "HOME"

Posted by Trixi on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 02:14

I rarely get the chance to post here anymore but love to visit and read all of my old stomping grounds.  I found this poem recently and even placed it in my sidebar at my other blog.  I love it and find it very profound and even though the words were written in the 1800's, they still apply to my life today.

Stay, stay at home, my heart, and rest;
Home-keeping hearts are happiest,
For those that wander they know not where
Are full of trouble and full of care;
To stay at home is best.
Weary and homesick and distressed,
They wander east, they wander west,
And are baffled and beaten and blown about
By the winds of the wilderness of doubt;
To stay at home is best.
Then stay at home, my heart, and rest;
The bird is safest in its nest;
O'er all that flutter their wings and fly
A hawk is hovering in the sky;
To stay at home is best.

Have a great day!!!

Blessings,

Catching up

Posted by Flossie on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 10:32

Well, good morning!  It has been so long since I have written anything!  I hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving!  We had a great time with family - cousins laughing and giggling, Aunts and Uncles, Granparents... I love the sound of family laughter.

I really miss blogging and sharing with all of you!

Over the past week we had our holiday parade in town - so much fun!  The youth were busy working at our house all week "creating" their float.  Then on Nov. 22nd we marched down the main street of our town and saw many faces we knew!

Our little town of Roseville is turning 100 years old - little older but that is when it was incorporated - and will have a float in the Roseville Tournament of Roses Parade next year.  Look for us if you watch that parade.  They are getting volunteers to start attaching stuff.  Could be a lot of fun!

I jhave been overseeing a Keeper's group for my homeschool coop.  We have been working on crocheting and the girls are busily making hats for charity.  The great thing is that the boys are even being inspired.  I was at my friends house last night and her one son has chain stitched a rope that goes the length of their house - or further?  I challenged him to measure it for me :)

I will try and share some pics.  I so enjoy getting a glimpse into your life that way :)

Blessings,

Flossie

The Week of Waiting

Posted by Amy W on 2008-Dec-3 at 9:11 AM in Christmas and Advent

For the next few weeks I’ll be sharing a bit of what we are doing for our Season of Christmas here on the homestead. How we are working to make things quieter and reflective for the Advent weeks leading up to Christmas and then how we’ll celebrate like crazy for the 12 Days of Christmas and our plans to wrap it all up with a special conclusion on Epiphany.
Let us start with week one.

Advent
This is the week of Waiting.

Be patient . . . . until the coming of the Lord. James 5:7

To celebrate this week we will:
a
List things it is hard to wait for
a
Write a poem, story or draw a picture about how it feels to wait
a
Write out the above verse and memorize it
a
Pray for others who have to wait for things they need
a Donate outgrown and gently-used holiday clothes to the local free store

It's okay to be different

Posted by Amy W on 2008-Dec-3 at 8:42 AM in Christmas and Advent

This year we are making the decision to celebrate a bit differently.
Christmas is not just a day.
It is a season and, as I recently learned, it has three traditional parts.
The first part is the sober, reflective, preparatory time of Advent.
Then comes Christmastide, the twelve days of celebration beginning with Christmas Day.
And thirdly is
Epiphany. January 6th. The day we celebrate the arrival of the three wise men with their special gifts for Jesus.
Each part of the season is important.
Advent is the quieting of our hearts and minds, the silence and solitude, the clearing out of the old to make way for the new. Then we are quickly swept into the joy and merry making, the glorious light and rejoicing that is Christmas. Which leads us into the wondering conclusion, Epiphany, the giving of gifts to a needy world.
We are celebrating the
Season of Christmas. Our little family will be spending this week and the next three weeks in Advent. Taking time to celebrate the time of waiting, the time of hoping, the time of preparing and the time of welcoming in special unique ways.
I am, right now, working on our
Christmastide celebrations- something special and significant for the 12 Days of Christmas that doesn’t include pear trees and drummers drumming.
We’ve already decided that we will celebrate Epiphany by taking our boxes of non-perishables to the local food bank.
There is so much we could be doing, perhaps should be doing in the midst of this Season. But I have also come to realize that the bigger and grander, “more meaningful” I try to make things- and all at once- in one big gulp—the higher my rate of failure.
This is something I don’t want to fail at. Over the last few Christmases we’ve really changed our attitude here in our home and so this is simply the next step for us. And next year we will add something more- building on the foundation we are creating as a family.
And in the process, I hope,

Making New Traditions.
Meaningful Traditions.
