Clothesline Help Needed!

Posted on Thu 3 May 2007 at 11:18

in Family Life - Post Comment Now that we're moved in I'm looking to put up a clothesline. I haven't had a clothesline since I was a young child at home. My mom dried some things on the line, but not religiously or anything. Now that I got an energy-efficient front-load washer that gets the clothes 1/2 dry already, I'm ready to try hanging things outside. I'm fortunate that my laundry is in the entry of my house so it will be quick and easy to take it outside.

Any tips for getting something set up? I'd like to not spend much $. My dh is fairly handy and could put something together with a little direction. I'd kind of like either a T-pole type construction or a wooden design of some sort. Ideally I'd like the pole part to double as a place to hang a baby swing for my 8 mo. old. The umbrella-type lines seem fairly cheap and easy but I couldn't use it for a baby swing. Do they get enough of a breeze since there are so many clothes close together? It seems that clothes would take longer to dry on one of them than on a longer line. Anyways, any clothesline tips would be greatly appreciated!

We had a great clothesline back north on our first farm. One end was made very long and that's where we put out the swing.
It wasn't anything elaborate really -- seems the previous owner had simply made a large 'pi' shape (you know, pi symbol from math....) really it was that on one end, and on the end with the swing it was more like an upside-down W with a flat top and not humps.
LOL....lost you totally in this ramble yet? The 4 lines ran through one section, and the added section on the one end was for the swing. Maybe you can follow that well enough. It was a neat line with the swing, and as 2 of our daughters were babies on that farm, it certainly came in handy!
