I was recently asked if there was any GM sweet corn on the market, or if it was all field (livestock) corn. Yes there is is GM sweet corn and it has been on the market since 1998. Most of the sweet corn you buy in the grocery store is genetically modified to contain BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) a natural bacterium found in soil around the world, as has field corn. While it is a useful natural pesticide used properly it should not be inside the food we eat! There have been many cases of animals around the world dying after eating BT corn. There are numerous studies showing that genetically modified foods are NOT safe for animals or people to eat. However these studies are covered up and the FDA rushes through the approval on many products.
I encourage each family to do the research themselves but here are a few sites to get you started.

Great information Kim! It is unbelievable how much GM products are on our store shelves. GM corn is a fine example. Do you know that nearly all pre-packaged foods contain corn of some sort? And the marjority of it is GM corn. I highly recommend reading the book "King Corn" (I believe that's the name of it). Very interesting. We, as a nation, need to start speaking with our pocketbooks and stop buying all foods that contain GM ingredients. Wheat and soy beans are other popular GM grains. It's nearly safe to say that all pre-packaged products contain either corn, wheat or soy and nearly all commercial corn, wheat and soy crops are GM. What's sad is that the food companies don't have to label their products showing that they contain GM ingredients. That's why we shop at local farms, grow our own and buy organics. This way we can be sure that my family isn't consuming GM ingredients. Organic foods cannot contain GM's.

Here, here! We also need to question why other countries (such as the European Union) are taking a firmer stand on this than we are here. Could it be because there is only a handful of companies who stand to gain huge profits from GM's, all based in North America, all with heavy government influence? Just follow the money.
