A Sad Morning~

Good morning Family & Friends! Today has started out on a sad note. Hubby went outside to check on our chicks before he left for work. He noticed that they were all WAY too quiet when he got up to the coop. He looked in on the chicks (we had 4) to discover that 2 were missing. He got to looking around and saw a HUGE snake curled up in the corner of the coop. That snake had 2 huge balls in its body. (the chicks) That NASTY snake ate them!

Hubby came back inside and told me to get the pistol. He went back outside and shot the snake. When he got him out and uncoiled, we realized just how big he was. Hubby said it was a "chicken snake." We haven't had one of those in the coop (that I know of) for a few years. I pray we don't see one any time soon.

We have had to deal with copper head snakes around the dog pen the last few years. We also believe that a snake bit our dog about 2 weeks ago. We noticed that her face was really swollen and "ate out." It looked the same way it did last year when another one of our dogs were bit by a copper head (we saw that happen.) She is on the mend now and looking much better. Thank you Lord!

Definately not the way I had anticipated starting our day. I am just so thankful that hubby was able to kill the snake. I know that I will be extra careful when going to collect eggs from now on. I also need to figure out what to do with the other 2 remaining chicks to keep them safe until they can get bigger.

This is also our first day back to "school." I have started another blog, strictly for Home Education on Homeschoolblogger.com/Homemomto3. I'm not sure if I will keep up both blogs. I just wanted one to chronicle our school year and the new curriculum and methods that I will be implementing this year (Charlotte Mason-with my DS (9) and Far Above Rubies- with DD (15). I know, that sentence was way too long. What can I say- it's back to school!

Bless all who pass this way!

Poor Cows!

For those of you who have cows, keep them from going under trees during a storm.

This is so sad!

My Roosters~

I decided to try a new template today. The other one was just getting to be TOO orange. I guess it was okay for the Fall season. Change is good. Besides, I like the roosters better.

I have 4 roosters here at the house. I have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 1 unknown rooster and a black cochin  bantam. Their names are Buddy, a Rhode Island Red (8 years old- he gets Senior rank around here!) Zale, also a Rhode Island Red is 3 years old and very sweet, for a rooster. Vader, the cochin is just cute! Then there is Cup the Confused, the unknown rooster. He gets a bit confused at times and thinks that he can lay eggs. He will get  in the laying box and cluck while scratching around , just like the hens do before laying an egg. He may think that he is a hen at times, but he will take on any other rooster and win every time.

Now you might be asking, "Why do you have so many roosters?"Well, DD 14 is just really good at picking out the males while they are still chicks, when we have only wanted the hens. Once we had them for awhile and they got their names, there was no turning back. I wouldn't want to be rid of them. I LOVE to hear them in the morning. Not to mention the fact that my DD says that Cup the Confused, will let the kids know when I am almost home. He will start crowing before I get there. (I thought that only dogs had that kind of hearing.)

Oh well, I thank The Lord for my roosters. I couldn't ask for a better alarm clock and a better greeter!

Have a blessed evening ya'll!

My Chickens~ My Girls~

I thought that I would show a picture of what "my girls" look like. My birds act like puppies. As soon as I come out in the morning, they will follow me if I let them out for the day. They will follow me everywhere. I've never had chickens do this before. We have had this set of chickens for about 4 months now. They are great layers and companions.

My 17 year old daughter love the "girls" as much as I do. She even has a ring tone on her cell phone with chickens clucking on it. How many 17 year old girls would own up to that? She is a true Southern Bell and proud of it!

Not much else happened today other than school, shopping and church this evening. Thank you Lord for my Home, health, family, friends and my salvation!

To God be the Glory!

My Dream~

These 2 girls are my dream. I would love to be able to get at least one dairy cow for our homestead.  We have the space for a small pasture. We would end up having to feed it more on our own though. Hubby has said that would be too expensive. I can see his point at this time.

Isn't it amazing that 100 years ago people had to just about have a cow to survive. Actually they needed their animals for food. Here we live in the 21 century and all of our food comes from stores.( I am sure that those people of old would have loved to be able to get all of their food from stores.)

People think that having a cow (those I spoke to) would be a waste of a time. How could being able to  feed your family fresh milk, butter, cheese, and much more be a waste of time? Just think, no drugs, hormones, or any of that stuff. Just good ol' fresh dairy products.

I have been researching dexter and mini jersey cows. They would be able to "fit" the need for our family. They are hard to come by though. Mind you, I am not complaining here, just dreaming. (Wanting to be more self sufficent in the food department.)

I will just have to be patient and see what comes to pass. Who knows, maybe some day my dream will come true! The Lord knows the desires of our hearts. I will praise Him for what I have and what I don't! To God be the glory!
