Why can't they make placemats out of material that doesn't shrink when you wash & dry it???!!!!!

An EXCELLENT Question!

One I've often asked myself. In sheer self-defense, I began making my own: pretty print front fabric, solid color back fabric, a little lightweight batting in between, stitched every inch on the diagonal (forms a diamond shape "quilting" pattern) and then bound. As long as I prewash the fabric before making 'em, they go through the washer and dryer without a problem and no shrinkage. I'm even making a few sets (placemats and napkins) for Christmas gifts this year.

Doesn't that drive you crazy?

I bought some at Ikea and they were so large (That's why I chose them). Now, they are half the size.

Surely the manufacturers must know thye'll be washed; we are serving FOOD on them, for goodness sake!

I am going to make my own, and pre-shrink the fabric! Let me know what kind you like, and I'll make some for you, too! :)

I have found things like that dry pretty quickly on their own... so washing them and then just laying them on your table (provided you have a formica top), and turning them over now and again, will get them dry in pretty quick order... without shrinkage. You could hang them over your shower curtain rod to dry too... or your clothesline, of course.

Just a thought.

Oh, one more thing... they make awful pretty plastic placemats too and those are just wipeable.

Peaceful day~ Andrea
